RICHMOND CAPTURES STATE GOLF TITLE IN RECORD FASHION

CHRIS BAKER, BROWNSTOWN CENTRAL, INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST

In record-setting fashion, Richmond High School, coached by Ron Murphy, captured the 67th Annual 2003 IHSAA Boys Golf Championship at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin on June 18-19, 2003.

With a record single-round total of 288 on opening day and a second day effort of 299, the Red Devils finished up with a 587.  That total broke the old mark of 589, set by Mishawaka Marian in 2001.  The previous single-round mark was 293, held by Anderson and set at Old Oakland Golf Course in the second round in 1972.

Richmond put together consistent individual totals by sophomore Brian Maurer (76-70—146), senior Jon Schultz (72-74—146), sophomore Ben Lakoff (72-76—148), senior A.J. Walton (71-79—150) and senior C.D. Hockersmith (73-80—153) to win by seven strokes over runner-up Center Grove.

The title was the fifth earned by Richmond, having taken home honors in 1941 (322/9 holes), 1993 (618), 1996 (614) and 1997 (616).  The Red Devils were also state runners-up in 1936, 1973 and 2002.

The record also fell on the individual side of the competition, with Chris Baker (11), Brownstown Central going low each day with rounds of 68-67 for a new record total of 135, breaking the old standard of 139 set by Gary Gant of North Central (Indpls.) in 1970.  Baker finished seven strokes in front of Alex Kopko (11) of Center Grove, who managed a 71-71—142.

Other participants turning in rounds in the 60s included:  James Sacheck (11), Zionsville (69/1st round); Justin Kime (12), Concord (68/1st round); and Aaron Knapp (11), Columbus North (69/1st round).
