Floyd Central makes it back-to-back state titles;
Junior
Tyler Duncan of Columbus North set a state finals record for 18 holes in
Wednesday’s final round en route to winning the individual state title, while
Floyd Central repeated as the team state champion during the 71st

Central completed its quest for back-to-back titles with a 299 on Wednesday
and a two-day total of 596. The Highlanders are the
first team to repeat as champs since Noblesville won
in 1998 and 1999.
Floyd
Central’s lineup consisted of all seniors with Ben Engle topping the group at
71-75-146 finishing tied for ninth overall. Jon Shackelford finished at 148,
Steven Shaffer 150, Collin Curry 152 and Scott Reed 157.
Also of
note from Tuesday was the double eagle turned in by Hamilton Southeastern’s Christopher Schwager.
The junior tallied a 2 on the par-five, 10th
hole that played 501 yards.
Brad Smith wins Fred A. Keesling Mental
Attitude Award
Smith
finished fourth in the individual competition shooting a 69 on Tuesday and 73
on Wednesday for a 36-hole score of 142 and two shots
under par. He has competed in the IHSAA state finals all four years of his high
school career. Smith was also captain and starting point guard on the

family is no stranger to winning the Fred A. Keesling
Mental Attitude award. Brad’s father, Todd, won the state individual title as a
junior in 1980 and won the Mental Attitude Award in 1981. Todd’s two cousins
Terry and Chris Smith won the mental attitude awards in 1980 and 1987. Chris
also won the individual state championship in 1985.
Brad
graduated as the Salutatorian in his class of 131 students. He was the vice
president of the National Honor Society as a senior. Smith also works with the

the DAR Good Citizen’s Award.
