Floyd Central makes it back-to-back state titles; Columbus North’s Duncan sets course record

Junior Tyler Duncan of Columbus North set a state finals record for 18 holes in Wednesday’s final round en route to winning the individual state title, while Floyd Central repeated as the team state champion during the 71st Annual IHSAA State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

Duncan torched the 6,736-yard course by recording nine birdies for a 63 for a two-round total of 136. He began the day tied for eighth overall. His 63 bettered the course record of 64 shot in 2001 and the state finals record of 66 held by three different players. His tournament score of 136 was one stroke off the state finals record.

“With the thousands of competitive golfers who have played this course since 1992, this is truly a remarkable accomplishment,” said Ted Bishop, PGA Director of Golf at The Legends of Indiana, referring to Duncan’s record round. For him to accomplish this feat in the final round of the state championship is really amazing.”

Duncan fended off challenges from Mishawaka Marian sophomore Adam Sumrall who finished second at one stroke back and Bloomington South junior Kyle Perry who carded a 139 for third place. Both began the day tied for second and fourth, respectively. Peru senior Brad Smith finished fourth at 142 and Carmel senior Peter O’Neill and South Knox freshman Adam Schenk both tied for fifth at 143. Christian Mathew, a senior from Harrison (West Lafayette), who led the field after a first round 68, struggled to a 78 in the final round to finish tied for ninth.

After leading the field into Day 2 with its opening round score of 297, Floyd Central completed its quest for back-to-back titles with a 299 on Wednesday and a two-day total of 596. The Highlanders are the first team to repeat as champs since Noblesville won in 1998 and 1999.

Floyd Central’s lineup consisted of all seniors with Ben Engle topping the group at 71-75-146 finishing tied for ninth overall. Jon Shackelford finished at 148, Steven Shaffer 150, Collin Curry 152 and Scott Reed 157.

Carmel finished as the runner-up with a 600 with Bloomington South third at 601. All nine teams that advanced to the final day finished within 19 strokes of each other.

Also of note from Tuesday was the double eagle turned in by Hamilton Southeastern’s Christopher Schwager. The junior tallied a 2 on the par-five, 10th hole that played 501 yards.

Brad Smith wins Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award

Peru senior Brad Smith is the 2006-07 Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award winner for boys’ golf as selected by members of the IHSAA Board of Directors.

Smith finished fourth in the individual competition shooting a 69 on Tuesday and 73 on Wednesday for a 36-hole score of 142 and two shots under par. He has competed in the IHSAA state finals all four years of his high school career. Smith was also captain and starting point guard on the Peru basketball team.

The Smith family is no stranger to winning the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude award. Brad’s father, Todd, won the state individual title as a junior in 1980 and won the Mental Attitude Award in 1981. Todd’s two cousins Terry and Chris Smith won the mental attitude awards in 1980 and 1987. Chris also won the individual state championship in 1985.

Brad graduated as the Salutatorian in his class of 131 students. He was the vice president of the National Honor Society as a senior. Smith also works with the United Way, the Mayor’s youth council and the Miami County Junior Golf Program among others.

He is a 2007 nominee for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award and the National Scholar Athlete Award. Smith is also the recipient of the DAR Good Citizen’s Award.

Smith will attend Ohio State University on a golf scholarship and will major in finance.

The recipient, nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability in boys golf.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000 check to Peru High School in the name of Brad Smith.

Brad is the son of Todd and Claire Smith.
