NOBLESVILLE WINS FIRST IHSAA BOYS GOLF TITLE

Opening the day with a nine-stroke lead, Noblesville kept its poise and cruised home in record fashion to win its first team title Thursday in the 62nd Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Golf State Finals at Prestwick Country Club in Avon.

Noblesville finished at 599, 27 strokes better than runner-up Pike at 626. Noblesville's 36-hole total broke the tournament record of 605 set by Anderson in 1972 at Old Oakland. The lowest 36-hole total at Prestwick had been a 613 by Tipton in 1994. Noblesville's 299 total in the second round was an 18-hole record for tournaments played at Prestwick, bettering the 300 shot by the Millers in the opening round. The all-time record is 293 by Anderson in 1972 at Old Oakland.

Trent Tormoehlen, a senior at Seymour who shot a 68 in Wednesday's first round, came in at 76 Thursday to finish at 144 and claim the individual title. He is the second individual state medalist from Seymour, joining 1988 IHSAA Boys Golf champion Kyle Wieneke. Tormoehlen's total tied him for 10th on the all-time 36-hole record list with Todd Smith of Rochester in 1980. The all-time best is a 139 by Gary Gant of North Central (Indianapolis) in 1970 at Old Oakland.

Tormoehlen was two strokes better than playing partner Bryan Kohlmeier of Noblesville, who fired his second straight 73 to finish at 146. Chris Eckerle of Pike was third at 147.

Besides Kohlmeier, Noblesville's other scores were Justin Werkley 74-76-150, Dan Witt 78-73-151, Jeff Chapman 75-77-152 and Chad Smith 81-77-158. The Millers, ranked third in the state in the final Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association poll, were coached by Bob Spacey.

It was Noblesville's fifth IHSAA state title in all sports and the first since the 1987-88 school year when the Millers captured the girls golf crown for the second straight year. Noblesville's other IHSAA championships came in boys track (1913) and girls basketball (1987).

The round was conducted under cloudy skies, with temperatures in the mid-80s and in extremely muggy conditions on the par-72, 6,700 yard course. The original field of 21 teams and 21 individuals from non-advancing schools had been cut to 10 teams and eight individuals after Wednesday's first round. Scores were generally higher in the second round as no players matched or broke par. The day's best scores were the 73s by Witt and Kohmeier of Noblesville.

TORMOEHLEN NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE RECIPIENT

Trent Tormoehlen , a senior at Seymour High School, was named the 1998 recipient of the Fred A. Keesling Award for Mental Attitude in IHSAA Boys Golf. Tormoehlen was the individual medalist and helped the Owls to a seventh-place team finish. Tormoehlen shot a 68 in the Wednesday's first round, which was the lowest first-round score in the 62 years of the tournament. It tied the lowest one-round score in the 12 years of tournament play at Prestwick.

Tormoehlen ranked 11th in a class of 281 students and scored a 1470 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. He will attend the University of Evansville on an academic scholarship and major in mechanical engineering. A three-year letterman in football, he was an academic all-state selection in 1997. He has been active in a number of extracurricular school activities, serving as president of the school's National Honor Society chapter as a senior.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Tormoehlen's name to Seymour High School.
