1999 IHSAA BOYS GOLF STATE FINALS

Prestwick Country Club, Avon

June 16-17

Noblesville repeats as team champion;

Greenwood's Nathan Fritz grabs individual title

Senior Nathan Fritz of Greenwood shot a three-under-par 69 to win individual honors by four strokes, and Noblesville repeated as the team champion in the final round of the 63rd Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Golf State Finals at Prestwick Country Club in Avon.

Noblesville, which entered second-round play tied with Marion at 309, gained an eight-stroke advantage on the opening nine with a 150 team total, and that was enough to bring home the trophy for the second straight year. The Millers finished at 309-310-619.

Noblesville was led by senior Jeff Chapman, who followed an opening-round 75 with a 73 to finish at 148 for fourth place individually. Chapman was followed by teammates Bryan Kohlmeier and Zach Mosnot at 157, Chad Smith at 160 and Brian Hinds at 161.

Noblesville, ranked No. 2 in the final coaches association poll of the season issued prior to the tournament, advanced to the state finals by winning the Noblesville Sectional and finishing second in the Anderson Regional. The Millers are the fifth consecutive state champion to advance through the Anderson Regional.

The championship was Noblesville's second in boys golf and sixth IHSAA title overall.

Fritz of Greenwood was the only player to break par over the two days, shooting a three-under-par 69 in the second round and a one-under-par 143 for the 36 holes. Fritz, who was playing in his third state finals, finished fifth in the 1998 tournament with a 151 total.

Junior Todd Chin of Marion and sophomore Jeff Overton of Evansville North tied for second at 147, followed by Chapman and freshman Herbie Champlin of Culver Military at 149.

The 69 by Fritz tied him for fifth all-time for one round in the IHSAA state finals, and his 36-hole total of 143 tied for sixth on the all-time list. The all-time bests are 67 (Fuzzy Zoeller, New Albany, 1970, Old Oakland) and 139 (Gary Gant, North Central of Indianapolis, 1970, Old Oakland).

Just as it was in the opening round, the 6,750-yard course was buffeted by brisk winds out of the north. For most of the field, the resulting scores were indicative of the difficult conditions.

CHAPMAN NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE RECIEPIENT

Jeff Chapman of Noblesville, who helped the Millers to their second straight team championship, was named by the IHSAA Executive Committee as the 1999 recipient of the Fred A. Keesling Award for Mental Attitude in Boys Golf.

Chapman finished fourth individually in the 1999 state finals with a 148 total and played on two state championship teams. Academically, he ranked in top 25 percent of his graduating class, and also was a standout on the Noblesville boys basketball team. He will attend the University of Iowa on a golf scholarship.

Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship in Chapman's name to Noblesville High School.
