FORT WAYNE DWENGER WINS FIRST IHSAA SOCCER TITLE
Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger
won its first girls soccer state championship in dramatic fashion, defeating
Zionsville in penalty kicks, 3-1, after the teams played through 94 minutes
tied at one in front of 3,929 fans at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. Zionsville (17-4-2) just missed winning a
state title at the end of the second overtime when junior forward Zoe Stuart’s
shot crossed the goal line just after time expired.
In the penalty kicks,
Dwenger (21-3-1) took the lead for good in the second round when sophomore
midfielder Dakota Helms gave the Saints a 1-0 advantage. Both teams converted in the third round and
both missed in the fourth round, setting the stage for freshman forward Lisa
Underwood to clinch the IHSAA championship with a successful kick.
Dwenger took the lead at the
16:29 mark in the match on Underwood’s team-best 23rd goal of the
season off an assist from junior forward Danielle Parr.
Zionsville tied the match at
one at the 46:24 mark on a goal by sophomore defender Leah Einterz off an
assist from junior defender Anna Dykema.
The Eagles had 13 second-half shots, but Dwenger junior keeper Erin Jacobson
responded with seven saves in the match.
Both teams were making their
first appearance in the championship match.
The contest marked the second IHSAA girls final to be decided by penalty
kicks, with North Central defeating Andrean in 1999.
Coach Jason Wisniewski’s
victorious Saints advanced to the final with a 2-0 shutout of Evansville
Central (20-4) on Saturday afternoon, scoring both goals in the second
half. Zionsville recorded a 3-0 triumph
over Lake Central (15-6-2) in the semifinal round.
Zionsville’s Katelyn
Ostendorf received the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award following Saturday’s finale.
KATELYN OSTENDORF NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER
Zionsville High
School senior midfielder Katelyn Ostendorf is the 2005 recipient of the IHSAA
Mental Attitude Award for girls soccer.
Members of the
IHSAA Executive Committee present the award to the outstanding senior
participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, who was
nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude,
scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in girls soccer.
Ostendorf, a
class president the past three years, ranks first in her senior class of 320
students with a 4.63 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. She is pursuing an Academic Honors Diploma,
taking advanced placement classes.
“Katelyn’s
ability to lead and set an example for her peers is unprecedented,” said
Zionsville principal Jim Eggers. “She
has the ability to use good judgment, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate.”
On the field,
Ostendorf is a four-year letterwinner who was team captain this season. The academic all-state and all-district
performer appeared on the IHSAA Sportsmanship poster series in 2004-05.
Ostendorf,
daughter of Greg and Janet Ostendorf, will attend Rice University. She will major in science (pre-med) and also
play soccer.
Indiana Farm
Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check
for $1,000.00 to Zionsville High School in the name of Katelyn Ostendorf. Since 1989, over $512,000 in college
scholarships have been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving
high school students in the state.
