CARMEL CAPTURES FIRST BOYS IHSAA SOCCER TITLE

The Carmel Greyhounds won their first boys soccer state championship in school history, defeating the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers (20-3) 4-1, Saturday evening at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

 

Carmel lit up the scoreboard first at the 32:36 mark of the match on an unassisted goal from junior forward Justin Isenthal, his seventh of the season.  The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from senior defender Robby Lynch at the 38:13 mark, his 13th of the season. 

 

Carmel came out quick and surprised Elkhart Central in the first minute of the second half when junior forward Daniel Moore scored his 20th goal of the season.  Senior forward Aaron Henkle was credited with the assist, his 19th of the season. 

 

Elkhart Central finally cracked the board at the 49:53 mark with a goal from senior forward Alec Purdie, his 36th of the season.  Carmel rounded out the scoring at the 69:16 mark on a goal from senior midfielder Tyler McCarroll, his 12th of the season. 

 

Carmel pounded the goal posting an 18-10 advantage in shots for the match.  Elkhart Central’s junior keeper Justin Holms allowed four goals and made five saves in 80 minutes.  Greyhounds senior keeper Zachary Carr allowed one goal and made two saves in 71:56 minutes played.

 

Coach Dan Kapsalis’ Greyhounds advanced to the final match with a 1-0 shutout of Evansville Memorial (19-2-2) Saturday afternoon.  Coach Ryan Leniski’s Blue Blazers advanced to the final match with a 4-2 double overtime victory over FW Canterbury (14-7-1) in the semifinal round. 

 

Carmel’s Zachary Carr received the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award following Saturday’s finale. 

 

ZACHARY CARR NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER

Zachary Carr of Carmel High School was named winner of the 2006 C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award for Boys Soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

 

Carr is a member of the National Honor Society and third chair clarinet in the Wind Symphony.  He is also a member of the Concert Band.  Carr volunteers his time with the National Junior Tennis League and is on the board of directors of the Net Literacy Organization.

 

Carr boasts a cumulative grade point average of 3.91 on a 4.0 scale and ranks 31st in his class.  He is a recipient of the National Merit Letter of Commendation, an AP Scholar, and is a three time Scholar Athlete Award winner.

 

“Zach Carr is an outstanding young man who has set a higher standard of achievement at Carmel High School,” said Carmel principal John Williams and Head Coach Dan Kapsalis.

 

Carr is the son of Nancy and Kevin Carr of Carmel.

 

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to Carmel High School in the name of Zachary Carr.  Since 1989, more than $551,000 in college scholarships have been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
