EVANSVILLE MEMORIAL SECURES UNDEFEATED SEASON AND IHSAA SOCCER TITLE

NSCAA/adidas National #1Evansville Memorial won its first IHSAA Boys Soccer State Championship, defeating Chesterton 1-0 Saturday evening at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Tigers (23-0-2) were on the scoreboard first in the 61st minute thanks to a header goal from junior midfielder Andrew Fuchs, his 22nd of the season.  Senior midfielder Daniel Farabaugh was credited with the assist thanks to a well placed corner kick.

The Trojans (18-5-1) stayed close through a fast paced first half that saw the scoreboard read 0-0.  The second half was much of the same, as each team’s keeper came up with numerous big saves.  Chesterton’s best chance to score came early in the second half, as sophomore Cole Galloway’s shot hit the crossbar and went out of bounds.

Memorial posted an 24-5 advantage in shots for the match.  The Tigers junior keeper Trev Wilgus had two saves in the match.

Coach Bill Vieth’s Saints advanced to the final match with a 2-0 shutout of Goshen (17-3-3) in Saturday’s semifinal match.    Coach James Sensibaugh’s Trojans advanced to the final match with a 1-0 victory over North Central (Indpls.) (17-4-3) in the semifinal round, beating the Panthers 6-5 in sudden death penalty kicks.
