NORTH CENTRAL ROLLS TO SECOND STRAIGHT IHSAA CHAMPIONSHIP!

North Central (Indianapolis) won seven of the 12 events to repeat as champion at the 69th annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving Finals at the Natatorium in Indianapolis.  Coach Bruce Patmos’ team recorded the fourth-highest point total in meet history with 295 to out-distance runner-up Homestead (209).  It is North Central’s third boys swimming title overall.  Patmos was voted “Coach of the Year” by his peers following the meet.

 

North Central opened the finals with a record-setting performance in the 200-yard medley relay.  The Panthers’ Michael Christy, Riley Boulden, Peter Jameson, and Sean White combined for a 1:32.95 time, eclipsing the standard of 1:33.05 by Carmel in the 2002 prelims.  It was North Central’s second state title in that event and its first since 1983.

 

The Panthers closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay for the second year in a row.  The foursome of Drew Sease, Ken Minturn, Christy, and Jameson just missed the meet record with a winning time of 3:04.24.

 

Jameson finished the day with four blue ribbons.  He recorded a dominating performance in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:37.11.  He broke the meet record in Friday’s prelims with a 1:37.02 effort, beating the previous mark of 1:37.36 by Jeff Lee of Munster in 1999.  Jameson recorded an individual double with a victory later in the 100 freestyle (44.93).

 

Christy, who matched Jameson with four blue ribbons, prevailed in the 200 individual medley with a 1:49.13 effort to earn his second state championship in that event.  He also won in 2004 as a freshman.  Christy added the 100 backstroke title later in the meet with a victorious time of 49.86.

 

North Central senior Drew Sease dominated the 500 freestyle, winning in 4:30.47 to add to his 200 medley relay crown.

 

Homestead, coached by Chad Englehart, earned its second runner-up finish in three years after placing second in 2004.

 

Homestead senior David Piercy recorded the third-highest winning total in state finals history in the one-meter diving, amassing 551.20 points.  Piercy, who became Homestead’s first-ever diving champion, defeated runner-up and 2004 winner Caleb Dunnichay (518.15) of Elwood.

 

Homestead also won the 200 freestyle relay, with Adam Lill, Kyle Frebel, Christopher Jones, and Andrew Hoffman combining for a 1:26.24 time.  It was the school’s first title in that event and its second relay crown overall (1998 200 medley).

 

Finals top seed Bryan Chovanec of Munster was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 20.81, edging Greencastle senior Andrew Bretscher (20.83).  Chovanec became Munster’s second champion in that event, joining Jason Gedmin (1988, 1989).  He helped the Mustangs to a fifth-place finish.

 

Crown Point senior Chris Morin edged Highland’s Patrick Augustyn (50.74) and Terre Haute North’s Jonathan Jensen (50.81) to win the 100 butterfly in 50.47.  Morin became Crown Point’s second champion in this event and its first since Phil Seaman in 1980.  Morin’s effort helped Crown Point place 10th.

 

Senior Aaron Koger of Richmond became his school’s second-ever winner in the 100 breaststroke with a 56.09 time.  He joins Chris Coveney (1981) as the Red Devils’ only champions in the event.

Greencastle’s Andrew Bretscher wins Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award

Greencastle senior Andrew Bretscher is the 2006 recipient of the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award as selected by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

 

Bretscher finished second in both the 50 and 100 freestyle at the State Finals, missing a blue ribbon in the 50 by .02.  The two-time State Finals participant holds eight school records (six individual), earning All-America honors in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly in 2005.  The two-time USA Junior National Qualifier was undefeated this season until the State Finals.  He also has run cross country all four years at Greencastle.

 

Bretscher ranks 19th in his senior class of 134 with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average.

 

“Andrew is outstanding in every area,” said Greencastle principal Dr. Susan D. Phillips.  “He is an academic leader and a positive role model for other students through his poise and disposition.”

 

Bretscher has been active in Latin Club and he has participated in Spell Bowl, Chess Club, Art Club, Martin Luther King Art Show, and Graduation Art Show.

 

Bretscher, the son of Paul and Mary Bretscher, plans to study engineering.  He has received an appointment to the Air Force Academy and has been accepted to Purdue and Ohio State.

 

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner, presented Greencastle High School with a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Andrew Bretscher that goes to the school’s general scholarship fund.  Since 1989, over $512,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school students in Indiana.

 

The recipient of this award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in swimming and diving.

 

The award, renamed in 1974, honors former IHSAA assistant commissioner Herman F. Keller, who served the association from 1961-73.
