NORTHROP BOYS HELP SCHOOL SWEEP TRACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Behind four individual winners on the evening, Fort Wayne Northrop captured its second IHSAA state championship on Saturday at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington.

The Bruins, also winners in 1997, totaled a record 86 points during the meet topping the two year old mark of 84 set by Lawrence North. North Central of Indianapolis finished a distant runner-up with 50 points and was followed by Lawrence North, the three-time defending champs, with 32.5. Elkhart Memorial was fourth at 32 and Fort Wayne Snider ended fifth with 30 points.

Northrop’s first place finish also gave the school a sweep of this year’s track and field state titles, just the second time that has occurred (1983 Gary Roosevelt). The Northrop girls’ team captured its fifth consecutive crown about 24 hours earlier. The boys team was coached by Bob Shank.

James Martzall and Travvis White each won a field event for the new champs. Martzall topped the list of Pole Vault participants at 15-9 and White’s best clearance of 6-8 in the High Jump won honors. In the running events, Charles Bailey finished the 110 Hurdles in 13.91 and was immediately followed in the next race by Kesonn Lee’s winning time of 10.70 in the 100 Meters.

There was one state meet record set during this year’s meet and, for the second night in a row, it came in the first running event – the 3200 Meter Relay. Carmel’s pack of Evan Bardach, Frankie Dixon, Robbie Granger and Thomas Martin combined for a 7:41.70 to eclipse Bloomington South’s 1999 mark of 7:42.64.

In the Long Jump, Donald Washington repeated as Indiana’s best with his best leap of 23-4.75. He took honors last year at 23-2.25.

Elkhart Memorial had a pair of individual champions with Julius Smith winning the Discus on a throw that measured 174-10. Aaron Jordan was the other Charger taking home a blue ribbon medal after his 21.64 winning performance in the 200 Meters.

In the 400 Meters, Jh’Rome Tuggle became the second state champion from Merrillville in the last three years with a time of 47.65. Former Pirate runner David Neville set the state meet record in the event in 2002 in 46.99.

This year’s meet returned to Bloomington for the first time since 1908 and also was a part of the IHSAA’s year-long Centennial Celebration. One hundred years ago, Boys Track and Field was the first sport to have a state championship event sponsored by the IHSAA. That first meet occurred on May 13, 1904.

Columbus North’s Wagner Named Winner Of Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award

Following the meet, Columbus North High School senior Christian Wagner was named winner of the 2004 Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Wagner won both distance events, the 1600 and 3200, the last two years and he also captured the championship at last fall’s Cross Country State Finals.

Ranking among the top 40 students in his senior class, Wagner was named Academic All-State Honorable Mention. He will take his talents to the University of Wisconsin next fall where he intends to major in Aeronautical Engineering.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Columbus North High School in the name of Wagner.
