BEN
A crowd of
5,551 saw Ben Davis run away with the school’s first-ever IHSAA boy’s state
title at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex
in
The Giants 400
relay team cruised to victory with a time of 41.33. Junior Matthew Terrell claimed his second
straight title in the 200, while senior teammate Rahpeal
Williams came in third to contribute valuable points for the Giants.
Defending
champion junior Corey Shank of Fort Wayne Northrop battled with Fort Wayne
Bishop Dwenger senior Kevin Schipper
in the pole vault. Shank cleared 16’6 on
his second attempt, while Schipper made the clearance
on his third try. Shank’s vault today
was six inches lower than his state record setting performance from 2007.
Another
repeat performance came from Gary Wallace senior Robert Gardner who won the 400
with a time of 47.72.
In the 100
meter dash, senior Shaun Smith of Terre Haute North won in a time of 10.47.
Soaring to a height of 6-11, junior Derrick Spight of
Warren Central won the state crown in the high jump.
For the
third year in a row, a Decatur Central Hawk walked away with the state title in
discus. Senior Robert Belden took first
place this year with a heave of 185-8, following in the footsteps of former
teammate and state champion Josh Greenwald who won in 2006 and 2007.
Andy Bayer
of Leo and Tito Medrano of Lafayette Jefferson, both seniors, fought their way
to a gutsy, close finish, in the 3200.
Bayer crossed the line at 9:02.82, just beating Medrano who came in at
9:02.94.
In the
final race of the night, the all-senior 1600 relay team from Gary Wallace ran
their way to the state championship, with anchor leg Robert Gardner finishing
the race with a blistering 46.38 split.

The Robert S.
Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award
Members of
the IHSAA Executive Committee announced D’Juan
Richardson of Warren Central High School as the winner of this year’s Robert S.
Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award in Boys Track and
Field.
Academically,
he is ranked 28th in his class of 760 and scored an impressive 1690
on the SAT. D’Juan
is a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, and is a Warren
Central student ambassador. He was named
an Indianapolis Professionals Association scholar and Circle City Classic honor
student.
Indiana
Farm Bureau Insurance, the proud corporate partner of all IHSAA tournaments,
presented a $1,000 scholarship to Warren Central in
