GIRLS GOLF STATE FINALS BEGIN FRIDAY
The top 11 teams and 16 of the 20 squads in the latest state coaches association rankings have advanced to the 38th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals which begin Friday at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

Top-ranked Roncalli, which finished fourth in 2009, posted team scores of 313 and 316 to win its respective sectional and regional championships and will make its fifth straight trip to the state finals. No. 2 Penn, No. 3 Richmond and No. 4 Martinsville, the defending state champion, each collected regional crowns on Saturday as well to earn their spots in the 21-team field. In all, 17 of the teams are repeat entries from a year ago.

Evansville Memorial, which finished second to Jasper at Eagle Valley on Saturday, will appear as a squad for the 11th straight year, one short of tying Martinsville’s record 12-year streak from 1990-2001. Jasper’s regional crown was its first since 1994.

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard is one of two teams to advance to the state meet for the first time. The Trojans won their first regional title by four strokes at Battle Ground on Saturday and are joined by Fairfield, the third place team at Cobblestone.

In addition to those teams, 21 individuals have moved on without their squads for a total of 126 participants representing 41 schools. Players will tee off the Middle 9 course and the Road 9 course beginning at 8:30 am ET / 7:30 am CT on Friday. Those teams and individuals that make the cut will return for a second day on Saturday with the first group again starting at 8:30 am ET. The first round tee times and pairings are available here.

Noblesville’s Meghan Potee, the 2009 state champion, has graduated but 13 individuals from last year’s Top 25, including a trio of fifth-place finishers have earned their way back this weekend. Richmond senior Trisha Witherby, the 2008 state champ, returns as does Roncalli senior Jamie Caylor and East Noble sophomore Katie Sharp. Witherby finished third (75) to Union County’s Ryleigh Waltz (71) at Westwood; Caylor (73) won a playoff with teammate Anna Gleixner for the regional win at Smock and; Sharp ran away with the regional crown at Cobblestone posting a 67 and winning by eight strokes.

Evansville North’s Natalie Schmett was runner-up (72) at Eagle Valley on Saturday, one week after posting a 69 to win the sectional at Fendrich.

Fans and media are invited to view the progress of the state finals by visiting www.golfstat.com. The IHSAA will post the hole-by-hole scores for every player throughout the two days.
