Unbeaten South Putnam Returns to Defend Class 2A Softball Championship
Three state finalists from 2011, including one defending state champion, are joined by four first-timers in the 28th Annual IHSAA Softball State Finals on Saturday at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.
The opener in Class A at 10:30 am ET pits No. 2 Lakewood Park Christian (26-5) against No. 5 Indianapolis Lutheran (24-4) followed by Adams Central (20-12) taking on No. 1 South Putnam (30-0) for the 2A title at 1:30 pm ET. In 3A beginning at 4:30 pm ET, No. 8 Andrean (27-4) meets Edgewood (21-11) and the 4A finale at 7:30 pm ET calls for Huntington North (23-7) and Plainfield (22-9). All four games will be streamed live at www.IHSAAtv.org.
A year after winning the school’s first softball title, Class 2A No. 1 South Putnam returns with the hopes of a repeat performance. The Eagles have won 55 straight games and will look to become just the fourth team to finish a perfect season in tournament history, the first in the Class 2A tournament and the third to win back-to-back titles in any class. They haven’t lost a game since April 9, 2011 finishing 28-1 last year.
Also finding their way back to the championship games for a second straight year are No. 2 Lakewood Park Christian (1A) and No. 8 Andrean (3A). Both hope to do one better this year after settling for runner-up finishes in 2011. Lakewood Park Christian turned away No. 3 Cowan in last Saturday’s semi-state and will try again for the school’s first state championship. Andrean denied No. 2 Woodlan, which had played in last year’s 2A final opposite South Putnam, in the semi-state championship game.
Andrean and No. 5 Indianapolis Lutheran, which has beaten three top 10 teams in its last four outings, are making their sixth championship game appearances, the second-most in tourney history behind Center Grove (9). Both have won a pair of titles in their previous visits.
Four teams – Adams Central (2A), Edgewood (3A) and both 4A participants, Huntington North and Plainfield -- are covering new ground this year having never traveled this far in the state tournament. Adams Central will be looking for the school’s first crown in a girls sport and second overall having previously won the Class A football title in 2000. Edgewood, coached by Mick Hammett, who also doubles as the school’s athletic director, will be going for its first state title in any sport since joining the IHSAA in 1964. Huntington North hopes to add a third state crown to those won in girls basketball in 1990 and 1995 while Plainfield hopes to capitalize by winning the school’s second title overall to go along with the 1999 3A boys basketball winners.

Media Credentials: The 2011-12 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential issued previously this year will allow for admission. To apply, please e-mail your request (with name of individual) as soon as possible to IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org. E-mail requests MUST originate from a recognized business account; e-mails from personal accounts (ie: yahoo.com, aol.com, etc.) will not be accepted. The application deadline is Thursday, June 7, at 4 pm ET / 3 pm CT. Approved requests will be available for pickup at the main gate nearest the right field corner on Saturday.
Services: Starting lineups and game programs will be circulated to members of the media in attendance on Saturday. Computer-generated official box scores will be available following each state championship game. Line scores for all games will be posted on the IHSAA website. Complimentary wireless access also will be available in the press box for filing purposes.
Photography: Photographers may take up positions in the photography stands in the outfield side of each dugout for field level shots. At no time during the game should photographers be shooting from the playing field itself.
Interviews: Interviews with coaches and players may be conducted on the field following the conclusion of the awards ceremonies. In order to allow the grounds crew to do its work, we ask your cooperation in conducting interviews outside the foul lines.

Goodland’s Dick Wheelock to be Honored as State’s Top Softball Official
Dick Wheelock of Goodland, Ind. is the recipient of the 2012 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of softball. Wheelock will be honored in a special ceremony during Saturday’s state finals.
Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year.
Wheelock has spent over 21 years as a softball official, during which he has officiated 17 sectionals, 14 regionals, two semi-states and state championships in 2003 and 2008. In addition, as a member of the Western Indiana Officials Association, Wheelock is a licensed football, basketball, and volleyball official.
From 1997 through 2003, he volunteered as an official for the Newton/Jasper 13-15 Fastpitch Softball League. In 2006 he served as a local association rules interpreter for football.
Outside of officiating high school sports, Wheelock works as a bailiff for the Newton County Superior Court. The St. Joseph College graduate (1968) is married to his wife, Connie.

Lebanon’s Bethany Moore Chasing Career Singles Wins Record at State Finals
Nine singles players and six doubles teams will converge on North Central High School in Indianapolis this weekend to determine the 31st singles and 22nd doubles state champions in girls tennis.
One singles match will be played on Friday at 10 am ET with the winner advancing to the 2 pm ET quarterfinal round. Saturday morning’s semifinal round begins at 10 am ET followed by the state championship and consolation matches at 2 pm. A detailed schedule is listed below.
Lebanon’s Bethany Moore will make her fourth consecutive appearance in the individual singles state finals and is one victory away from tying the state record for most career wins. With a 103-5 career mark, the senior needs one more to tie Munster’s Mary Hill who went 104-1 from 2006-09. Moore was the 2010 state runner-up as a sophomore.
Her quarterfinal opponent could be the toughest she could ask for in Penn senior Alexandra Brinker. Brinker eliminated Moore in last year’s quarters, 6-4, 6-3 and went on to finish in third place.
Aby Madrigal, one half of last year’s state champion doubles team from Highland, has a new partner this time around in sister Vanessa who was a singles state finalist as a freshman two seasons ago.
Jasper teammates Ashley Rogers and Elizabeth Theil, who fell to Aby Madrigal and then-partner Elizabeth Quinn in last year’s doubles championship also return for another shot at the top spot. The two teams would not meet until the final match should they advance.
Elizabeth Maxson of Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, who will team with Audrey Rang, was a state finalist in the doubles tournament two years ago as a freshman.

The 46th annual baseball tournament moves to the semi-state round with double-headers being played at four different sites this Saturday. The winner of each game earns a spot in its respective state championship game at Victory Field in Indianapolis the following weekend.

Boys Golf Regionals Today, Friday
This week, boys golf regional competitors will be playing for spots in the 76th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at seven courses around the state. The top three teams and top three low individuals not including those that advance with their team, will earn a tee time in the state finals at The Legends of Indiana in Franklin beginning on Tuesday, June 12.
Results from each host site will be added at www.ihsaa.org as they are received with the intention of posting the state finals pairings and tee times on Saturday afternoon as long as all regional tournaments are completed by Friday.
