Five Returning Winners Look to Repeat in Boys Swimming & Diving
Five individual state champions from 2012 return this weekend hoping for repeat performances at the 76th Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Trevor Carroll of South Bend St. Joseph is the defending champ in the 200 freestyle and had the second fastest time in the state during sectionals (1:41.03). LaPorte’s Joshua Arndt won last year’s one meter diving competition and enters as this year’s favorite after scoring 562.85 points last weekend. Max Irwin of Bloomington North was the top 100 butterflyer a year ago and comes in with the second-fastest time (49.18) this week. Northridge’s Austin Flager holds the third spot in the 100 backstroke (51.55) following last year’s state title in the event. And Chesterton’s Blake Pieroni, the 2012 100 freestyle winner, earned the top seed with a 45.82 time in sectionals.
Pieroni is one of three Chesterton swimmers occupying the top spot in four events. Teammates Aaron Whitaker is No. 1 in the 100 butterfly (48.79) and 100 backstroke (50.99) and Ethan Whitaker went fastest in the 200 freestyle (1:40.80). The Trojans also had the top time in the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.27) as well.
Cody Taylor of Columbus North had the fastest time in the state during sectionals in the 200 individual medley (1:51.25) and 100 breaststroke (56.32). The Bull Dogs also hold the top spot in the 200 free relay at 1:25.54.
No. 3 Carmel, is the three-time defending state champion, but should face a number of challengers for the team title including No. 1 Chesterton, No. 2 North Central of Indianapolis, No. 4 Northridge or No. 5 Bloomington North.
Preliminary swimming heats get underway Friday night at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT. The top 16 in each event will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing ninth through 16th on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday beginning at 9 am ET / 8 am CT with the top 20 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each. All championship and consolation finals, including diving, will commence at 1:05 pm ET / 12:05 pm CT on Saturday.
Saturday’s championship and consolation finals will be streamed live on IHSAAtv.org beginning at 1 pm ET/12 CT with Mark Jaynes and 11-time state championship coach Tony Young on the call.

Advancement
The top 16 in each swimming event during Friday’s prelims will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing nine through 16 on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday with the top 20 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each.

Franklin’s Kurt Hass Named Outstanding Swimming Official of the Year
Kurt Hass of Franklin is the recipient of the 2013 Interscholastic Athletic Official Award for excellence in the sport of swimming.
Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year.
An active member of Indiana Officials Association, Kurt has officiated swimming for six years. During his career, Kurt has worked five sectionals, three regionals, and four state finals. Kurt has served as an IHSAA Clinician for three years.
Kurt was selected for this honor by a committee representing the official’s associations. In Indiana there are 26 associations made up of men and women who give up much of their personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student athletes in our state. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.
Kurt is a 1966 graduate of Franklin Community High School and a 1971 graduate of Indiana University where he obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education. He retired from Franklin Community High School after a 35-year teaching and coaching career. Kurt and his wife Janet have been married for 41 years and have two children, Mark and Amanda.

Girls Basketball Semi-State Action on for Saturday
Sixteen teams will battle for the right to play for a state championship this Saturday as the 38th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament rolls on to the semi-state round. Each of the four sites will host a doubleheader.
Scores from each game will be posted to the IHSAA website as they become available on Saturday.

State Finals

Girls Basketball State Finals Coaches Interviews Monday in Terre Haute
Coaches from the eight schools in the girls basketball state finals will gather Monday, February 25, at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute for the pre-tournament administrative meeting with media interviews to follow. A deli-style lunch open to attending media will be available at 12 pm ET. The administrative meeting, which begins at 12:30 pm ET will be closed to the news media with coaches interviews to follow in a round-table setting at approximately 1 pm ET. Parking will be available in “Lot D” just across Ninth Street to the east of the Hulman Center. Ninth Street runs one-way north. Use the southeast doors nearest the Ticket Office to enter the facility and ushers will provide direction to the meeting room.
Updated statistics, rosters and other team information as submitted by the schools will be distributed at the interview session. For outlets that cannot attend, a special state finals information package will be available at ihsaa.org that evening.

Five Indiana high schools have been selected by USA Today High School Sports and entered into its Best Mascot Contest which begins Feb. 25 and runs through March 5. Andrean Fighting 59ers, Frankfort Hot Dogs, Northeast Dubois Fighting Jeeps, Shoals Jug Rox and Vincennes Lincoln Alices were selected from our state among 255 entries from around the nation. Kelsi Byrd of North Montgomery eclipsed 1,000 points in her career vs. Turkey Run on Jan. 31. She finished with 1,047 career points.
Linton-Stockton has 2 members of the boys' basketball team that have reached the 1,000 point mark - Austin Karazsia and Dess Fougerousse.
New Palestine's Michael Morris hit the 1,000-point mark with the go-ahead basket in the Dragons' 52-51 victory over previously-unbeaten Mt. Vernon. His 3-pointer marked his 19th point of the night to give him 1,000, and broke a 45-all tie, giving the Dragons the lead for good. Morris is the fifth New Palestine player to reach 1,000 points in the school's 104-year basketball history, and he is the first to do so since 2004 graduate (and former Division III All-American at Wheaton College) Kent Raymond. New Palestine also won its first-ever outright Hoosier Heritage Conference title and third HHC title overall.
