Five Returning Champions Headline Track & Field State Finals
The state’s best in high school track and field converge in Bloomington this weekend as the IHSAA conducts the 110th Boys State Finals on Friday and the 40th Girls State Finals on Saturday. Both meets will be contested at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University with field events beginning at 3 pm ET and running events at 4:15 pm ET.
The boys meet, the oldest event in any sport sponsored by the IHSAA, features three defending state champions in various events while the girls meet has two individuals that won three events between them.
Jermaine Parrish of New Albany and Lucas Wallace of Lafayette Jefferson are the defending state champions in the 100 and 200 meters, respectively, and begin the weekend with the state’s top times. Parrish will attempt to become the first repeat winner in the sprint since Greg Allen of Gary Wirt won in 1991 and 1992 and just the third ever since the event began in 1980.
Da Quan Brown of Lawrence Central is the other returning state champion. Brown is the third seed in this year’s 300 hurdles, the event he won a year ago.
Brionna Thomas of Fort Wayne Wayne swept last year’s 100 and 200 meter events and stands ready for a repeat performance with the top times in both events this year. With victories in both she would become the fourth individual to win both events in consecutive years joining Maicel Malone of North Central (1986, 1987), LaShanda Harper of Harding (1994, 1995, 1996) and Candyce McGrone of Warren Central (2007, 2008).
Eastern’s (Greentown) Bethany Neeley won last year’s 1600 meter race and begins the state finals with the second-best time in the event. She helped lead her school’s basketball team to a state runner-up finish in March.
Connor Sorrells of Barr-Reeve, last fall’s cross country state champion, enters Friday as the top seed in the 3200 meters while the girls cross country state champ, Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka, has the second-fastest time in the 3200.

Media Credentials: Deadline is Thursday, May 30, 2013, 4 pm ET. Please note that the 2012-13 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential will NOT allow admission to this event as a specific credential is required – no exceptions. Legitimate working news media should apply for credentials by e-mailing (with name of individual applying) IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille at jwille@ihsaa.org. E-mail requests MUST originate from a recognized business account; e-mails from personal accounts (ie: gmail.com, yahoo.com, aol.com, etc.) will not be accepted.

Eight Teams Still Alive in Girls Tennis State Finals
Top-ranked Carmel along with No. 2 Evansville Memorial, the defending state champion, lead this year’s field of eight teams in the 39th Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals.
Four quarterfinal matches will be played Friday at 3 pm ET at Carmel and Fishers high schools with the winners returning on Saturday at 10 am ET at North Central High School for a pair of semifinals and the championship match at 2 pm ET.
In the quarterfinals at Carmel on Friday, Evansville Memorial (21-0) will meet No. 7 North Central (17-2) in one match with home-standing Carmel (13-0) taking on No. 10 first-time qualifier Carroll (Fort Wayne) (22-2) in the other contest. At Fishers, No. 11 Park Tudor (9-5) meets No. 4 Penn (20-0) and No. 6 Floyd Central (20-5) takes on No. 25 Greenwood (17-5).
North Central is making its state-best 20th appearance in the state finals but its first since 2004. Carmel, Evansville Memorial, Greenwood and Penn are each repeat entries from last season with Carmel making its fifth consecutive appearance, Evansville Memorial its third in a row and Greenwood and Penn their second straight.
Also taking place this weekend at four sites around the state are the individual regionals for singles and doubles players. Pairings for those matches are listed below.

Boys Golf Sectionals This Weekend
Sixteen of the 30 sectionals begin Friday (May 31) as the 77th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Tournament Series tees off. Three sectionals, hosted by Lafayette Jefferson (Battle Ground), Fairfield (Black Squirrel) and Norwell (Timber Ridge) are scheduled for Saturday with the remaining 11 slated for Monday starts. Qualifying individuals and teams will advance to one of five regionals set for June 6-7.
Seventh-ranked Floyd Central, which will participate at Covered Bridge on Monday, will be trying for its 11th consecutive sectional title, the longest active streak in the state. The Highlanders’ 23 sectional crowns ranks fifth in state history. Top-ranked Columbus North, competing at Greensburg Country Club, is chasing a seventh straight sectional and No. 12 Jasper, the host at Sultan’s Run, is hunting a sixth straight win.
Defending state champion Evansville Harrison is one of 13 teams competing Friday at Fendrich in Evansville.
