Record Numbers to Attend Tuesday’s IHSAA Student Leadership Conference
With the goal of promoting positive traditions and sportsmanship in the secondary students of our state, the Indiana High School Athletic Association will conduct its 10th Annual Student Leadership Conference (SLC) on Tuesday (June 18) at Plainfield High School.
One of the largest conferences of its kind in the nation, this year’s event will draw record numbers with 1,050 attendees entering grades 9-12 and represent 108 different Indiana high schools. All will have the opportunity to meet and interact with one another, hear from several speakers both national and local in scope, and participate in three different breakout discussion sessions covering more than 30 wide-ranging topics. Each of the IHSAA’s 410 member schools was invited to send a team of student-athletes with an adult facilitator to the conference.
Featured speakers include the dynamic and “high octane” Harvey Alston who’s unforgettable words of individual responsibility for achievement have improved spirits, spurred growth, and changed lives. Joining Alston is the internationally-acclaimed comedian/magician Stephen Bargatze. Bargatze’s genuine personality endears him to any audience and his motivational message touches many on an emotional level. Both gentlemen have been regular speakers at the SLC for the last decade.
Additional state and local leaders will be on hand to lead discussion topics in numerous categories including sportsmanship and philanthropy, college preparation, mental toughness, proper eating and hydration, hazing, working with the media, and careers in sports to name a few.
During the lunch session and immediately following, students also will have the opportunity to gather information on post-secondary education as admissions representatives from colleges and universities across the state will be in attendance.
“The purpose of the conference has always been to help reinforce what is learned through interscholastic athletics and apply that to other aspects of a student-athletes life,” says IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Sandy Searcy, who has served as the Conference Administrator since its inception. “We want to assist them with life skills and information they can take with them to impact their own schools, communities and teammates.”

About the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA)
Founded in 1903, the purpose of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) is to encourage, regulate and give direction to wholesome amateur interschool athletic competition between its 410 member schools. The Association provides state championship tournament series in 20 sports, 10 for girls and 10 for boys. Approximately 160,000 student athletes participate in IHSAA sports on an annual basis.
