IHSAA to honor South Knox Radio Announcer Keith Doades
A recognizable voice to Knox County fans, Keith Doades of Media Five Sports has been selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee to receive the 2013-14 Distinguished Media Service Award for District 3.
Doades’ contributions to education-based athletics will be recognized on Tuesday evening when North Knox visits conference rival South Knox in boys high school basketball. IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox and Sports Information Director Jason Wille will make the presentation.
The long-time radio play-by-play announcer for South Knox boys and girls basketball games, Doades is the owner and manager of Media Five Sports, a high school sports production company that purchases airtime on various radio stations in Knox, Daviess, Greene and Crawford counties in southern Indiana. He is also Director of Marketing for Graber Post Buildings in the post frame building industry.
The Decker, Indiana native began his broadcasting career as a sophomore at Vincennes University and since that time estimates he’s announced more than 2,500 games involving mostly high school basketball, football, baseball and softball and even some cross country, track and golf.
Described by those that work with him as a “throwback broadcaster”, “the consummate professional” and “someone with the ability to paint the picture and make you feel like you’re at the game”, Doades has worked with Media Five in one form or another since 1990. Prior to that, he spent nearly 12 years in management and advertising sales with Green Broadcasting in Vincennes. He also worked part-time for the Vincennes Sun Company doing sports play-by-play, news, board operations and production while attending college.
In the early 1980s, Doades initiated the coverage and announced the first girls basketball broadcasts in Knox County on former station WRTB and later became among the first in the state to air every game of a girls basketball team (North Knox) on WUZR from 1991-97.
Doades is a 1975 graduate of South Knox High School and went on to earn his B.S. degree in 1979 from the University of Evansville with a double major in Radio-TV and Interpersonal Communications.
He’s been a member of the Vincennes Kiwanis Club since 1986, is a current member of the PACE Community Action Agency board of directors, is a past Kiwanis Lt. Governor, and 12-year board member of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce. He’s also an avid distance runner and has participated in four marathons over the years, including twice at the famous Boston Marathon.
Keith, married to Kim, is the proud father of three grown children – Aaron, Audra and Brandt.
This is the 29th year the IHSAA has recognized outstanding members of the Indiana news media from each of its three legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. District 3 covers 42 counties across southern Indiana. (IHSAA) is to encourage, regulate and give direction to wholesome amateur interschool athletic competition between its 412 member schools.
