Survey Summary (pdf)
The 18-member IHSAA Student Advisory Committee, made up of student-athletes from across the state of Indiana, is in its eighth year of operation. The committee represents the entire IHSAA membership, and its committee structure mirrors that of the IHSAA Board of Directors in class, district, and diversity. Members of the committee are chosen from those who attend the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference each year.
The Student Advisory Committee formulated a mission statement that outlines its role as an IHSAA advisory group:
The Student Advisory Committee is a diverse, dynamic group of student-athletes focused on providing a means of education and communication for its constituency. The group serves as a conduit between student-athletes, administrators, and the Executive Committee of the IHSAA. The Student Advisory Committee promotes all standing ideals of the IHSAA, including leadership, sportsmanship and integrity.
During the first meeting of 2008-09, elections were held to establish officers:
President: Taylor Sanders, Bedford North Lawrence High School
Vice President: Cathy Wingstrom, Westview High School
Secretary: Erin Beck, Fort Wayne Canterbury High School
One of the Committee’s functions includes hosting student meetings, held in conjunction with the Fall Area Principals meetings around the state. Member school principals have been asked to allow their student leaders to accompany them to their fall meeting. Student Advisory Committee members will lead the student-athlete meetings and gather insight on their perspective on high school athletics.
In addition, the Student Advisory Committee assists the Executive Committee in awards ceremonies during the IHSAA State Championship events throughout the school year. The group is also responsible for planning and administering the annual IHSAA Student Leadership Conference.
The IHSAA, as part of its self-imposed obligation to the state of Indiana, recognizes the importance of providing an avenue for student input, and is pleased to have the opportunity to present a forum for the continued exchange of ideas with those who are most directly affected.
