Fishers Holds Off Defending State Champion Cathedral for First Baseball Crown
Senior Grant Richardson doubled and later scored on a walk in the fifth inning to provide the eventual winning run as Fishers claimed its first-ever Class 4A state title at Victory Field.
Richardson also pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Luke Albright to earn the save.
Albright picked up the victory with 5 1/3 innings of three-hit ball. He didn’t allow his first hit until Cathedral’s Peyton Schofield led off the fifth with a single.
The Irish, who were seeking a repeat title under second-year coach Ed Freije, eventually loaded the bases in that sixth inning, but Richardson struck out Alex Scherer to end the threat.
In the seventh, Cathedral put two men on, but Richardson coaxed Cathedral’s No. 3 hitter, Jared Poland, to pop to shortstop, then got Collin Greene to fly out to center field for the final out.
Tigers left fielder Ben Burton doubled in two runs in a three-run uprising in the second inning that gave Fishers the lead for good. Matt Wolff had two hits and walked twice for the winners.
Cathedral (23-9-1) scored single runs in the first and fourth innings (both without benefit of a hit) then added its final run in the bottom of the fifth. Courtesy runner Carson Caito scored the first two runs for the Irish.

Fishers’ Matt Wolff named Mental Attitude recipient
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Matt Wolff of Fishers High School as the winner of this year’s L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Baseball.
Wolff graduated earlier this month with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He has been active in his church, served as a peer guide for junior high students and has been an excellent role model for youth according to the school’s administration.
Besides playing second base and pitching for the Tigers baseball team, he was also the football team’s captain and starting quarterback. He was a four-year member of the school’s athletic leadership council.
Matt is the son of Brian and Angie Wolff of Fishers. He will serve our country by attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and will play baseball for the Midshipmen.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA's corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to general scholarship fund at Fishers High School in the name of Wolff.
The award is annually presented to an outstanding senior participant in each state championship game who has best demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in baseball. The award is named in honor of the late L.V. Phillips, who served as the second commissioner of the IHSAA from 1945-62.
