Borden Tops Triton for School’s First State Championship
The Borden Braves held off a formidable fourth-quarter rally by the Triton Trojans and reaped the benefits: a 55-50 victory in the Class A title game and the first state championship for the school in any IHSAA team sport.
The Class A final, billed as a battle between top defensive teams, turned out to be exactly that for three quarters. The teams went the final 5:33 of the first half without scoring, and Borden led 18-9 at halftime. Borden held a 28-19 edge after the third period.
But the fourth quarter turned explosive. With standout guard Clay Yeo leading the surge, Triton gradually sliced Borden's lead to 44-42 with 2:45 remaining.
Coach Doc Nash's Borden team put the game away at the free throw line, hitting nine of its last 12. The Braves, winning their last 10 games, finished 24-3.
The Braves, with balanced scoring, were led by Jalen McCoy's 15 points. Michael Lynch scored 13 and Cody Bachman added 10. Garrett Vick led the Braves with six rebounds.
Yeo led coach Jason Groves' Trojans with 26 points. Tanner Shepherd added 10 points and Joey Corder grabbed seven rebounds.
Triton was seeking its second Class A state championship in its fourth appearance in the boys state finals. The Trojans finished 20-6.

Borden’s Michael Lynch named Trester Award Winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Michael Lynch of Borden High School as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award in Class A Boys Basketball.
Academically, he ranks sixth in his class of 59 students. He serves as senior class treasurer, has been team captain for both the Borden cross country and track teams and is active in both his church and its youth group. He also took a leadership role in helping with a variety of cleanup and building projects to assist tornado victims in neighboring Henryville last spring.
He is the first Borden student-athlete to win an IHSAA mental attitude award.
He is the son of Joe and Nancy Lynch of Borden and intends to enroll at the University of Indianapolis in the fall.
The award is annually presented to a senior participant in the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability and is named after the IHSAA’s first commissioner who served the Association from 1929 to 1944.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Borden High School in the name of Michael Lynch.
