BREBEUF JESUIT REPEATS AS STATE CHAMP ON TIEBREAKER, WARSAW’S OSTROM TOP INDIVIDUAL
Third-ranked Brebeuf Jesuit edged No. 8 Columbus North on a tiebreaker for the team title and Warsaw’s Tyler Ostrom claimed the individual championship during the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.

Brebeuf Jesuit (288-303-591) claimed the title on the fifth score tiebreaker after the Braves finished even with Columbus North (283-308-591) at 591 each after 36 holes of play. It was the second consecutive team title for Brebeuf Jesuit and coach Ryan Brammer and just the second time in tournament history that the championship was decided by the fifth player score. Columbus North also finished as the runner-up to Lafayette Jefferson in 1987 on a tiebreaker.

The Braves were led by Wil Pahud’s 10th place showing overall following a two round score of 71-74-145. Columbus North’s Michael VanDeventer finished in a four-way tie for fifth place at 67-76-143.

Norwell (295-300-595) finished third in the team competition followed by Zionsville (297-302-599) and Floyd Central (291-308-599) who tied for fourth place to round out the top five teams.

Following a record-tying first round on Tuesday, Ostrom finished 63-74-137 (-7) edging Zionsville freshman Adam Wood (71-68-139 -5) by two strokes for the individual title. He became the first boys player from his school to win the state crown. On Tuesday, Ostrom carded 10 birdies including seven on the front nine to tie a state finals and course record with a 63 (-9). His only bogey came on No. 18.  The junior shares the record with Tyler Duncan of Columbus North who fired a 63 during the final round of the 2007 state finals.

Avon senior Patrick Rodgers (70-71-141), the defending state champion, and Norwell senior McCormick Clouser (69-72-141) tied for third place.

Columbus North held the lead heading into Wednesday after carding a state finals record 283 (-5) on Tuesday to break the old mark of 286 set by Floyd Central in 2006. The Bull Dogs were led by a pair of freshmen – VanDeventer’s 67 (-5) and Christian Fairbanks’ 70 (-2), their No. 4 and No. 3 players respectively.

Wednesday’s final round start was delayed to 12:30 pm after steady rains and lightning moved through the area throughout the morning. The afternoon brought sun and clouds and temperatures that reached the low 70s. Tuesday’s opening round was played under ideal conditions with sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s.

AVON’S PATRICK RODGERS WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD
At the conclusion of the state finals, Patrick Rodgers of Avon High School was selected as the winner of the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

The Committee presents the Keesling Award to the outstanding senior participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, nominated by his principal and coach, was determined to have best demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in boys golf. The award is named after the former long-time state tournament director.

Rodgers, the 2010 state champion and 2009 runner-up, ranked fourth in his graduated senior class of 600 students. He will move on to Stanford University where he will play golf for the Cardinal and study economics.

He is the son of Charlie and Judy Rodgers of Avon.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Avon High School in the name of Rodgers.
