Team Effort Propels Carmel to Fifth Straight State Title
Led by Juniors Wyatt Davis and Jacob Mitchell, the Greyhounds set the tone early and didn’t look back during the 82nd Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals.

After defending his 200 Individual Medley title and helping Carmel win the first three events of the day, Wyatt won his third consecutive state crown in the 100 Backstroke with a state record time of 46.66. Classmate Jacob Mitchell, who also won the 200 Freestyle, set a state record in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:16.72. This was Mitchell’s second straight 500 Freestyle state title.

Neither Carmel, nor the tandem of Wyatt and Mitchell was finished with their record setting day, though. The two juniors led the way for the Greyhound’s 400 Freestyle Relay team as they put a stamp on the event with a first-place finish and state record time of 2:58.75.

Wyatt and Mitchell both captured four state titles. While Wyatt accomplished the feat during last year’s state finals, Mitchell joins the fraternity as only the 10th individual to do so in state history.

Franklin Community, which captured its second consecutive runner-up finish, was led by senior Jacob Destrampe. After winning last year’s 200 Freestyle, Destrampe switched events and took home first place in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle. Destrampe was also named this year’s mental attitude recipient.

Juniors Tristan DeWitt of Carroll (Fort Wayne) and Kyle Adams of Munster also took home first place titles in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke, respectively. In the diving pool, senior Caiden Lake of Oak Hill edged out Devin Ramsey of Seymour by a narrow three points to take home the diving crown. Lake scored a 525.85 to Ramsey’s 522.85.

This is the fifth consecutive team state title for head coach Chris Plumb’s Carmel Greyhounds.

Jacob Destrampe wins Mental Attitude Award
Senior Jacob Destrampe of Franklin Community was recognized following the state championship meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award.

Jacob has been no stranger to the state finals in his time at Franklin Community. After a State Runner-Up finish in the 200 Freestyle in 2017, he went on to capture the event’s title in 2018 while helping lead his team to an IHSAA State Runner-Up trophy – Franklin’s highest finish ever at the swimming state finals. He cemented his status as an elite Indiana swimmer by being named an Indy Star finalist for Swimmer of the Year in 2018 and by capturing the 2019 IHSAA 50 and 100 Freestyle crowns. Jacob’s also been recognized nationally as a Scholastic All-American by USA Swimming.

Outside of athletics, he has volunteered with Special Olympics and the Johnson County Community Foundation. He was also the recipient of Franklin Community’s S.A.G.E award – awarded by teachers in recognition of being a positive example to his peers. Academically, Jacob is ranked 9th in his class and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.

He is the son of Kevin and Lori Destrampe of Franklin, and will attend Indiana University to study Biology/Pre-Med, and will compete for the Hoosiers’ Swimming and Dive team.

Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presented $1,000 to Franklin Community High School's general scholarship fund in the name of Jacob Destrampe.
