CARMEL COMPLETES UNDEFEATED SEASON
Top-ranked Carmel (21-0) turned away No. 3 Brebeuf Jesuit (24-2), 4-1, to capture the 2010 boys tennis team title at North Central High School in Indianapolis on Saturday.
It was the sixth state championship in the sport for the Greyhounds, their first since 2004 and third under coach Mike Bostic. Bostic also guided the 2003 and 2004 state champions, both of which finished undefeated 21-0 seasons as well.
In the final match, Elliott Yee topped Peter Ciacia, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles while Connor Dunn and Alex McMahan defeated Colin Miller and Raghav Vasudevan, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles for Carmel’s first two points. The clinching point came at No. 1 doubles when Chris Bertolini and Pat O’Neill topped Seth Gochnauer and Rico Lumanlan, 6-4, 6-4. Yee finished 25-0, Dunn and McMahan finished 24-0 and it was the first loss of the year for Gochnauer and Lumanlan (13-1).
Conor Cunningham’s 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, win over Mark Kite at No. 3 singles was Carmel’s fourth victory.
Brebeuf Jesuit's Dougie Barnard (20-1-1), the defending state singles champion, tallied the lone point for the Braves which were playing in the state championship match for the first time under the current format. Brebeuf had won the 1973 state title under a different scoring system. Barnard defeated Mihir Kumar, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 1 singles handing the Carmel player his first loss of the year. Kumar (23-1) had defeated Barnard (20-1-1) earlier in the season.
Carmel earned its spot in the championship match with a 5-0 win over Fort Wayne Canterbury in Friday’s state quarterfinals and a 5-0 win over Munster in Saturday morning’s semifinals. Brebeuf, coached by Rick Scotten, defeated Terre Haute South, 4-1, on Friday and Jeffersonville, 4-1, in the semis.
Nineteen of Carmel’s 21 victories came by a 5-0 margin this season. Park Tudor was the only other team to score a point on the Greyhounds this season (Sept. 8).
MUNSTER’S SHAH WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD
Munster’s No. 1 singles player Aaditya Shah was named the winner of the Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
Shah, a four-year varsity player, has been a part of three state finals appearances with the Mustangs. He serves as team captain this season and was voted Most Valuable Player in 2009.
Academically, he has excelled in a very rigorous schedule of primarily AP and Honors classes. He serves as Student Body Vice President and has participated all four years in Speech and Debate. He has set a goal of becoming a doctor and intends to begin pre-medicine at Indiana University, Northwestern University or Stanford University.
He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Vijay Shah of Munster.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Munster High School in the name of Shah.
