RONCALLI WINS 3A SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP; FIRST STATE TITLE SINCE 2001
Andrea Rodriguez's three-run homer in the first inning was all the scoring Roncalli would need as the Rebels shut out Andrean 8-0 in the Class 3A state championship game at Ben Davis High School.
It was the third softball state title for the Rebels (1999, (2A); 2001 (2A)).
Roncalli came out of the gate hot leading off the first inning with a single to center by sophomore Kendra Lynch. It was followed by a bunt single by senior Mel Keyler and a sac bunt by senior Trista Cox setting up Rodriguez's blast to left field.
That was all Lynch, the Roncalli pitcher, would need as she proceeded to shut out Andrean the rest of the way allowing only five hits and one walk notching her 12th win of the season.
But Roncalli’s bats were not done yet as they managed to push another three runs across the plate in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
Roncalli senior Mel Keyler tied two state records for most runs scored in a game with three (Andi Miller, Boonville, 2010) and for most RBI with four (Sydni Phelan, New Palestine, 2009).
The Andrean 59ers finished 25-9 and were led by second year man Henry Ryan. Roncalli and head coach David Lauck finished the season 28-7.
ANDREAN’S KELLY RYAN NAMED 3A MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Kelly Ryan of Andrean High School as the winner of the 2011 Class 3A Mental Attitude Award in Softball.
Ryan, a four year starter for the 59ers, was named to the All-Northwest Crossroads Conference Team each of her four years. The two-time captain was selected as First Team All-State for her efforts during the 2011 season, in which she led the team in batting average, hitting .412.
“Kelly’s athletic and academic success is a testament to her maturity and desire to be the best she can be,” said Andrean Principal Reverend Paul E. Quanz. “She has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the classroom, in the hallways, and on the field of play.”
Ryan carries a 4.4 grade point average and is ranked sixth in her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Quill and Scroll Society, and was Editor in Chief of Acropolis, the school newspaper. She has spent many hours volunteering with her church youth group.
Ryan will attend Indiana University and will enroll in the Kelley School of Business. She is the daughter of Henry and Jill Ryan of Valparaiso.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the proud corporate partner of all IHSAA tournaments, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Andrean High School in the name of Kelly Ryan.
