2010-11 Class 4A State Finals Recap

June 11, 2011

CARMEL WINS EXTRA INNING THRILLER
Kennedy Haynes' double to the right center field in the bottom of the eighth inning scored the winning run in Carmel's 1-0 victory over Avon in the 4A state championship game at Ben Davis High School.

Haynes launched the one-out, game-winner off Avon pitcher Haleigh Chasteen which landed just out of reach of the right fielder's glove to score Shannon Hall from second base and giving top-ranked Carmel (28-2) its second softball state championship and first since 1994.

Hall was pinch-running for lead off hitter Erynn Petruzzi who had singled to right and advanced to second on an error by the fielder. Katie Bosler then walked to put runners on first and second before Kelsi Jones flied out to center setting up Haynes' heroics. Carmel closed the season by shutting out its last five opponents and outscored its six tournament foes by a 34-3 margin.

The win also marked the school's sixth IHSAA state championship this school year setting a new state record. The Greyhounds also won titles this school year in boys tennis, girls cross country, girls swimming, boys swimming, and girls tennis.

Carmel pitcher Katie Osborn struck out 11 Avon batters and walked five in eight innings of action to finish 18-2 for the season. With the loss, Chasteen finished 16-3. Breanne Lahart went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Orioles. Avon set 4A state championship game records with five walks and 10 runners left on base. The two teams also combined to set records with seven walks and 16 runners left on base.

Unranked Avon (26-8), coached by Jenny Shayotovich, was making its first appearance in the softball state finals. Emily Good was the Carmel coach.
