TECUMSEH WINS SECOND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THREE YEARS
No. 6 Tecumseh claimed its second state championship in three years with a 5-1 victory over the No. 3 Lakewood Park Christian in the Class A championship game at at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.
The Braves started off quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first as junior centerfielder Emily Tuley scored on a double by freshman Tiffany Summers and junior shortstop Cherish Lamborn scored following an RBI single to left field by junior Kara Snow.
Tecumseh continued to pull away in the top of the third as Lakewood Park Christian committed two errors, allowing two more runs across. Tecumseh’s defense rallied behind freshman pitcher Tiffany Summers, who had 10 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs on the day.
The Braves were paced by senior first baseman Kayley Pemberton (two hits and a stolen base), junior centerfielder Emily Tuley (one run, one triple and one single) and Summers (one RBI on a double and one single).
Lakewood Park Christian was led by senior Alyssa Koorsen who recorded two hits and one stolen base. The Panthers put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior Annie Weaver scored on the lone Tecumseh error on the day. She has reached base on a double to left field.
Tecumseh tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to claim their second state championship in three years. Coach Gordon Wood led the Braves to a 24-7 record.
This was Lakewood Park Christian’s first state finals appearance in any sport. The Panthers, led by coach David Carnahan, finished the season with a record of 25-6.
KAYLEY PEMBERTON OF TECUMSEH NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Kayley Pemberton of Tecumseh High School as the winner of the 2011 Class A Mental Attitude Award in Softball.
Pemberton has been a major contributor for each of Tecumseh’s two state championship teams (2009, 2011) and state runner-up team in 2008. She led the team in home runs during her senior campaign and was named to the 2011 All-Conference team. She has also participated in basketball and volleyball each of her four years.
Ranked first in her class, Pemberton carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Beta Club, Chemistry Club, and Art Club. She is active in her local church as a Youth Group leader and Bible School teacher.
In the fall, Pemberton will major in Chemistry Education at the University of Southern Indiana. She is the daughter of Brad and Wendy Pemberton of Lynnville.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the proud corporate partner of all IHSAA tournaments, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Tecumseh High School in the name of Kayley Pemberton.
