Late-Game Rally Leads Scecina to 2A State Championship
An big sixth inning helped Indianapolis Scecina past Adams Central, 4-2, in the Class 2A state championship game at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.
It was the second softball state title for Scecina (2007) and capped a 22-9 record under coach Cory Gray.
Adams Central struck first, scoring senior Olivia Macklin in the bottom of the second inning off of a Liz Luginbill (junior) RBI single.
The Jets held the 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning when the Crusader bats came alive. Sophomore Justice Carmichael singled up the middle for Scecina, and reached second on a stolen base. She and senior Darcella Blakey were brought home by senior Alexis Tarver’s single through the left side. Tarver scored thanks to a single from junior Megan Whisler.
Adams Central answered in the bottom of the sixth after an Olivia Macklin single to center field scored senior Bess Fiechter but couldn't muster any other runs.
Junior Liz Luginbill led the Jets of Adams Central with two hits and one RBI. Indianapolis Scecina was led by Tarver’s two RBI on two hits. Winning pitcher Michelle Rogers ends her junior season with a record of 15-6, surrendering just four hits on the day. Adams Central pitcher Sydnee Peterson ends her senior campaign at 15-7.
Cary Blake’s Adams Central squad finishes at 22-7 and as the 2A state runner-up for the second straight year.
Bess Fiechter of Adams Central Wins Class 2A Mental Attitude Award
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Bess Fiechter of Adams Central High School as the winner of this year’s Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Softball.
Bess is a member of the National Honor Society, Substance Abuse Awareness Council, Sunshine Society, Swing Choir, and yearbook staff.
Fiechter was named to the Academic All-Allen County Athletic Conference this year, and received All-Conference recognition her sophomore, junior and senior years. The senior slugger has a career batting average of .457. Her prowess extends to the volleyball and basketball courts as well, as she is a four-year starter in each sport.
She plans to attend Huntington University to study Nursing. She is the daughter of Gary and Stacey Fiechter of Monroe.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the proud corporate partner of all IHSAA tournaments, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Adams Central High School in the name of Bess Fiechter.
