Royals Run Away with First Girl's Track & Field State Title
Not even an hour-long rain delay could hold back Hamilton Southeastern from taking that final step after last year's second-place finish. Despite coming up just short of a championship last season, the Royals raised the state championship trophy for the first time in girls track and field.

Led by pole vaulter Kennedy Drish and a stellar 1600 meter relay team, HSE both started and ended the night on strong notes. Drish, who is only a junior, won her second consecutive pole vault title with a height of 12-06. The 1600 relay team – composed of Olivia Burgess (10), Mya Hammons (11), Annice McFarland (9), and Tierra Sydnor (11) – ended a dramatic race by edging out a surging Perry Meridian squad with a time of 3:51.10.

Meanwhile, the Royals depth over the course of the night helped them build a lead and provide insurance. Senior sprinter Camille Christopher found herself on the podium multiple times, finishing second in the 200 M Dash with a time of 24.19. She also came in third in the 100 M Dash, posting an impressive 11.81. Tierra Sydnor, the junior anchor of the Royals 1600 M Relay team, also scored fourth place points in the long jump with a distance of 18-02. Overall, Hamilton Southeastern posted 62 points as a team. Brebeuf Jesuit, who carried away runner-up honors for the evening with 44 points, were led by junior sprinter Semira Killebrew and a blazing 400 relay team. Killebrew, who won first place in the 100 dash with a time of 11.55, also anchored the Braves’ winning relay team that posted a 46.87, giving her two first place medals on the night.

The top teams weren’t the only ones with impressive performances, however. Destiny Washington, a senior hurdler from Lake Central, set a state record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.93. Emma Wilson, Greencastle’s junior distance runner, earned her second consecutive title in the 3200 run. Joining her in a repeat atop the winner’s podium, junior Shelby Tyler of Noblesville took top honors in the high jump after clearing a height of 5-11.

Addie Wanner of South Adams High School not only earned a runner-up finish in long jump and a third-place finish in high jump, but was also named this year’s Mental Attitude Award winner. Wanner took sixth in the 100 hurdles, and has been the track team captain for three years. Wanner participates in volleyball and is in the top 10 of her class with a 3.91 GPA. Next year, she will be joining the University of Louisville’s track team and to study nursing.
