A field of 381 schools prepares
for 25th IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament
A field of 381 teams will begin play Feb. 15 in the 2000 IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament Series. This year's tournament marks a milestone, as it will be the 25th girls basketball state tournament conducted by the IHSAA. The first was played in 1976, with undefeated Warsaw emerging as the state champion from a field of 360 schools.
The defending state champions are Clinton Prairie in Class A, Fort Wayne Luers in Class 2A, NorthWood in Class 3A and New Albany in Class 4A.
For the third year, champions will be crowned in four classes. The 2000 state finals will be played March 4 at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. This will be the first year since 1979 that Hinkle Fieldhouse will host the state finals. Hinkle Fieldhouse, which first hosted an IHSAA event in 1928, was the site of the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals in the tournament's first four years before the event was moved in 1980 to Market Square Arena in Indianapolis.
Sectional play is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, February 19. The 64 sectional winners -- 16 in each of the four classes -- will advance to regional competition at 32 sites. The regional format calls for a single game on either Tuesday, Feb. 22 or Wednesday Feb. 23.
The 32 regional winners -- eight in each of four classes -- will advance to semi-state competition on Feb. 26. There will be eight semi-states -- two in each of the four classes. At each semi-state site, two first-round games will be played the morning of Feb. 26, followed by the semi-state championship game that night. The eight semi-state champions -- two in each of the four classes -- will advance to the state finals March 4 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
At the state finals, there will be a championship game in each of the four classes, beginning with Class A at 10:30 a.m. and followed immediately by the Class 2A game. After a mid-afternoon break, the second session will begin with the Class 3A championship game at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Class 4A championship game.

Reserved tickets can be purchased by contacting the IHSAA at 317-846-6601 Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. EST. Orders must be received by February 11, 2000. Tickets will go on sale at the participating schools the week of the state finals. Contact participating schools for ticket distribution hours. Tickets also will be available during the week at the Hinkle Fieldhouse ticket office. Any remaining tickets will be on sale on game day at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
