A field of 64 sectional champions -- including six schools that won their first sectional titles -- returns to action Tuesday and Wednesday for regional competition at 32 sites in the 26^th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament.

At each site, one regional championship game will be played. Eight regional champions will be crowned Tuesday (Feb. 20), with the remaining 24 on Wednesday (Feb. 21). The 32 regional champions will move on to semi-state competition Saturday (Feb. 24) at eight sites.

Four regional championship games as listed below will be played at neutral sites as arranged by the participating schools and the IHSAA office due to travel distance, gym size or facility scheduling conflicts.

The regional field includes 32 of the 64 regional champions from 2000. Ten of the 32 regional championship games are rematches. The champions from the odd-numbered sectionals are designated as the regional hosts. In 2000, the regional hosts were the champions of the even-numbered sectionals.

• All four defending state champions – Triton (Class A), Fort Wayne Luers (2A), Indianapolis Cathedral (3A) and Ben Davis (4A) – advanced to the regional round.

• Defending Class 4A state champion Ben Davis (23-2) extended its run of sectional championships to a state-leading 10 with 42-36 victory over Perry Meridian at the Perry Meridian Sectional. The all-time sectional title streak belongs to Rushville with 18 from 1980 through 1997. Other schools who continued sectional streaks included Jasper and North Judson with their sixth straight titles and Fort Wayne Snider with its fifth consecutive.

• Hebron ended a 24-year title drought while winning its second sectional crown overall with a 51-29 triumph over Hanover Central at the Class 2A Wheeler Sectional. There was a family connection for the 19-4 Hawks. Jill (Bell) Biggs, mother of current senior guard Erin Biggs, was a junior guard on the 1977 Hebron championship team. Hammond Gavit ended a title gap of 17 years, while it was 14 years for Madison-Grant, South Newton, South Ripley and Tipton.

• Shanna Zolman of Wawasee clinched her third straight state scoring title with 78 points in two sectional games as the Warriors repeated as Class 3A Sectional 21 champions. Zolman unloaded 50 points on NorthWood in a 65-59 championship game victory for the hosts. The 50 points tied her school record set against Westview on Nov. 12, 1999 and is the state’s highest single-game effort this season. Zolman moved her career total to 2,204 points and into sixth on the state chart.
