State Finals Summary
Terre
Haute South, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, Southwestern
(Hanover) and North Vermillion etched their names into the IHSAA history books
as state champions of the 27th Annual Girls Basketball State Finals
held Saturday, March 2, 2002 in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
A
total of 5,344 players from 380 different schools were entered into the
tournament at the sectional level. Attendance for the four-game event drew
17,320 fans.
Class 4A
Terre Haute South got a big night from its junior center
and staked claim to its first girls basketball state
title with a 63-42 victory over South Bend Riley in
the Class 4A championship game at Conseco Fieldhouse in
Third-ranked
Terre Haute South had a decided height advantage with 6-6 junior center Reicina Russell roaming the paint. Russell tallied Class 4A
records for scoring with 31 points and seven blocked shots and affected
numerous other Riley attempts. The Braves constantly passed over the top of the
Riley defense to Russell for easy layins. Russell
scored 20 points and had five blocks in the first half alone.
Melanie
Boeglin was the only other Brave in double figures
with 10 points.
Juniors
Suntana Granderson and
Crystal Norman, Riley’s two scoring leaders, did most of the damage for the
Wildcats. Both chalked up 19 points and seven rebounds each, but no other Riley
player scored more than two points.
The
Braves, making their first appearance in the state finals, finished a 25-2
championship season under 20th year coach Alan Maroska.
Unranked
South Bend Riley, also making it first trip to the finals, completed a 24-4
year under eighth-year coach Mike Megyesi.
Darci Rector of
The
award in named after Patricia L. Roy, the former assistant commissioner of the
IHSAA, who is regarded both statewide and nationally as a pioneer in girls athletics. It is presented annually in each
classification of the state finals to a senior who best displays mental
attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability and was nominated by her
principal and coach.
Class 3A
New Coach, Same
Result – Fourth Straight Title For Bishop Luers
Even
with a new coach at the reins, the outcome was still the same as Fort Wayne Bishop Luers
defeated Gibson Southern, 51-37, to win the
Class 3A state championship at Conseco Fieldhouse in
It
was the fourth consecutive state championship for the Knights and the first in
Class 3A. In the five years of class basketball, Bishop Luers
becomes the first school to win titles in two different classes. The three
previous championships came in Class 2A.
First
year coach Teri Rosinski,
who succeeded Gary Andrews after nine years, led the unranked Knights back to
the top winning their ninth straight game to finish the season at 21-5.
Rosinski became the third woman to play and coach in the state finals
joining Judi Warren and Leah Wooldridge. Rosinski was
the 1977 Mental Attitude Award winner from Norwell and went on to be named Miss
Basketball that year.
Bishop
Luers’ defense took Gibson Southern out of its game
holding the Titans to a Class 3A record low scoring output. The Titans
committed 28 turnovers in the game and Bishop Luers
took advantage scoring 29 points off those miscues, 14 on fast-breaks. Luers committed 23 turnovers, but Gibson Southern only
managed eight points from them.
After
a tightly-played first quarter that saw Luers holding
a two-point lead at the break, the Knights began the second period with a 10-2
run and Gibson never got closer than six points the rest of the game. Luers enjoyed a pair of 20 point leads midway through the
fourth period.
Michelle
Hamlin led the way for Luers with 14 points and six
rebounds. Megan Dossen added 13 points. Ashley Nelson
of Gibson Southern tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds to take game honors.
Gibson
Southern, also unranked and making its first appearance
in the state finals, completed a 24-5 year under eighth year coach Jason Blackard. Blackard also led the
Gibson Southern softball team to a state runner-up finish in Class 2A last
June.
Jamie Elpers of Gibson Southern
High School was named as the recipient of the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude
Award in Class 3A Girls Basketball by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner,
presented a $1,000 scholarship to Gibson Southern High School in the name of Elpers.

Southwestern Wins First State Championship
Top-ranked
Southwestern of
The
Rebels (25-2) were led by their top four scorers on the season and all finished
in double figures, including Catherine Graham’s 20 points. Brianna Howard finished
with 19, Julie Brawner with 18 and Autumn Walker 11.
The 70 points scored by Southwestern was a Class 2A game record.
Fifth-year
Southwestern coach Donna Cheatham,
Southwestern
led the game from the outset extending its lead to as many as 12 points just
before halftime. Shenandoah managed to chip away at the lead cutting it to
three points with
The
Rebels’ hot shooting kept Shenandoah at bay throughout. Southwestern hit
24-for-43 from the field in the game for a Class 2A record .558 field goal percentage.
Amanda
Norris of Shenandoah set a Class 2A scoring record with 30 points, which tied
for the sixth best scoring output ever in a state finals game. She also tallied
seven assists, another 2A game record. Teran Warner
pulled down 13 rebounds for the Raiders tying the Class 2A mark.
It
was a disappointing finish for Shenandoah (22-4), which finished as the state
runner-up for the second year in a row and had its 15 game winning streak
snapped. The Raiders lost to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers
in the championship game a year ago, which is vying for the Class 3A crown this
season. Five players returned from last year’s team. Shenandoah was coached by
Todd Salkoski now in his sixth year.
Brianna Howard of

North Vermillion
Edges
The
battle between the top two ranked teams in Class A
lived up to its billing as North Vermillion
edged Hebron, 45-42, in the 27th Annual
IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse.
With
a one point lead and one second remaining in the game, senior forward Sherri
Norman sealed the victory for the Falcons with a pair of free throws for the final
margin.
It
was the first state championship in any sport for top-ranked North Vermillion,
a school of 254 students, located in
Kayla
Hinkle led North Vermillion with 14 points and Allison Hughes chipped in 12.
The Falcons top scorer, Ashley Hughes at 14.9 per game, was held to two points.
Hinkle also had 11 rebounds.
North
Vermillion, making its first appearance in the girls
basketball state finals, finished 25-1, including a 24-game win streak. They
were coached by Ken Gentrup.
Second-ranked
The
Hawks, coached by Jerry Bechtold (Lauren Bechtold’s father), finished 25-3 in its first trip to the
state finals.
