NorthWood Hangs On For 62-61 Victory in First Semifinal Game
Fort Wayne Luers hit a desperation shot as time expired but it only counted for two points as NorthWood hung on for a 62-61 victory in the first semifinal game of the Tournament of Champions on Friday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Luers' guard Rachel King hit a shot from just inside the three-point arc amid heavy traffic at the buzzer as an astounding comeback by Luers fell just short. NorthWood, last weekend's Class 3A state champion, led 61-49 with 3:19 remaining in the game before holding on for the win. King's jumper capped a 12-1 Luers run.
NorthWood had a chance to put the game away down the stretch but missed four of its five attempts from the free throw line, including two misses with :13.5 remaining that could have given them a five point lead.
Natalie Will of NorthWood took game honors with a Tournament of Champions record 31 points. She hit 10 of 15 from the field and made 11 of 12 free throws. Kasey Chamberlin and Amy Zercher followed with 11 points for the Panthers. King led Luers with 19 points, while Jennie Moppert finished with 15 and Emily Loomis 12. Luers, which won the Class 2A state championship last weekend, finished the season at 27-2.
NorthWood (25-3) moves on to Saturday afternoon's title game at 4 p.m. against the Clinton-Prairie-New Albany winner.
