24th Girls Basketball

State Finals will end

a fabulous era

at Market Square Arena

Two undefeated teams, a former state champion and five first-time finalists comprise the field in the 24th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Finals Saturday (March 13) at Market Square Arena.

It will mark the end of an historic era in Indiana sports; this event will be the final IHSAA state finals at Market Square Arena. Since the building opened in downtown Indianapolis in the fall of 1974, it has been the scene of some of the greatest moments in the history of Indiana interscholastic athletics. The 1999 IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals will be the 64th IHSAA state championship event at MSA, spread across four sports. Later this year, Market Square Arena will give way to Conseco Fieldhouse, located two blocks to the south.

The first IHSAA state finals at Market Square Arena occurred March 22, 1975 when the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals returned to Indianapolis after a three-year run at the Indiana University Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Marion defeated Loogootee 58-46 to win the 65th state championship. All told, the boys basketball state finals were played 15 times at Market Square before moving to the RCA Dome in 1990.

The IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals moved to Market Square Arena in 1980 after four years at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The 1999 state finals will be the 20th played at MSA. Of all venues that have been host to the IHSAA basketball state finals for boys or girls, Market Square Arena ranks second only to Hinkle Fieldhouse for the number of championship games.

Volleyball, the sport that launched the IHSAA-sponsored program for girls athletics in 1972, has played its last 10 state finals at Market Square Arena.

The IHSAA Wrestling State Finals moved to MSA from the Southport Fieldhouse in 1981. Attendance at the event has grown dramatically during those 19 years, with the 1999 event two weeks ago establishing attendance records for one session (11,027) and the four-session total (40,112).

The 1999 IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals will be the second played in multiple classes. Led by unbeaten Indianapolis Cathedral (27-0) and New Albany (25-0), the field's aggregate record is an outstanding 192-18 (.914). Only Austin in Class 2A, NorthWood in Class 3A and Fort Wayne Snider in Class 4A have reached the state finals previously. Fort Wayne Snider, guided then and now by coach Lamar Kilmer, won the 1988 state title with a 27-1 record. NorthWood reached the 1997 state finals in the last single-class tournament before falling to Crown Point 58-42 in the semifinals. Austin advanced to the 1985 state finals, but dropped a 56-54 decision to Wawasee in the semifinals.

Making their first state finals appearances will be Clinton Prairie, New Washington, Fort Wayne Luers, Indianapolis Cathedral and New Albany.

1999 STATE FINALS NOTES

CLASS A

While it is the first girls basketball state finals appearance for Clinton Prairie, the Gophers should be familiar with Market Square Arena. They won the Class A volleyball state title there the past two years, and seven members on the 1999 basketball team also were on the 1998 volleyball finals roster last November. Four starters on the basketball team were on volleyball squad, led by 5-foot-10 senior guard Kourtney Mennen.

A standout in volleyball with more than 200 kills last season, Mennen ranks third in state basketball scoring this season with a 27.9 average. She has had five games this season with 35 points or more, topped by a 42-point regional outburst against Tri-County. In six state tournament games, she's averaged 30.8 points. Mennen's strong postseason run has pushed her season scoring total to 727 points and her career total to 2,135 points. She ranks ninth all-time on the Indiana charts in both categories. Mennen has signed a basketball letter of intent with Indiana State.

Clinton Prairie's only losses were to Class 3A schools: perennial power Benton Central and regional champion Westfield. Since the latter setback, the Gophers have reeled off 18 victories. Veteran coach Connie Garrett, also the school's volleyball coach, is in her 28th season on the Clinton Prairie basketball bench.

For New Washington, it will mark the school's first IHSAA state finals trip in any team sport. The Mustangs came close a year ago, reaching the Greenwood Semi-State finals before losing to eventual Class A state champion Bloomfield 58-37.

Junior Kirsti Holloway leads the Mustangs with a 20.1 scoring average and is hitting 82 percent from the free throw line. Monica Tinsley, a 5-2 sophomore guard, has hit a team-best 58 three-pointers.

New Washington's only losses were to larger neighbors Charlestown, Madison, Jeffersonville and New Albany. Since falling to the Class 4A finalist Bulldogs on Jan. 19, New Washington has won 11 straight.

CLASS 2A

In 1985, Austin rode the talent of high-scoring Miss Basketball Jodie Whitaker to a state finals appearance. Fourteen years later, the Eagles return with three double-figure scorers in Baranda Collins (22.2), Sarah Winchester (12.3) and Brealie Collins (10.1).

After a 1-5 start that included a 50-43 loss to Class A state finalist New Washington, Austin recovered to finish the regular season 14-7. Under first-year coach Dave Deaton, the Eagles have hit their stride in the tournament by winning their five games by an average of 15.4 points. And they've done it with the Collins twins as the only seniors on the roster.

By contrast, Fort Wayne Luers has six seniors on the roster. But the top two scorers for the Knights are both sophomores. Guard Rachel King leads a balanced attack with 12.1 points a game and six-foot center Emily Loomis is right behind at 11.5. As a team, the Knights average 60 points a game and own an average winning margin of 22.5.

At midseason, Fort Wayne Luers played Fort Wayne Snider in back to back games and each inflicted the other with its only loss of the season. Snider drew first blood with a 36-32 verdict in the finals of the Summit Athletic Conference tournament. Luers gained revenge 59-47 in a regularly scheduled contest.

The Knights start two seniors, a junior and two sophomores.

CLASS 3A

Three precocious sophomores from NorthWood's 1997 state tournament team return for a final hurrah. This time, Natalie Will (18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds), Amy Zercher (16.5 points, 8.2 rebounds) and Angela Callendar (9.3 points) are the mainstays.

The Panthers weathered an early season storm when Zercher missed six games with a broken hand bone. But they finished the regular season with 13 victories in their last 14 outings. NorthWood has been powerful in tournament play, winning its five 1999 postseason outings by an average of 28 points. Steve Neff is in his 22nd year as NorthWood coach.

After finishing 13-9 last season with a first-round sectional loss, Indianapolis Cathedral opened the season ranked No. 7 in Class 3A. The Irish moved gradually towards the top spot, and ascended to No. 1 in the last poll of the season after Evansville Memorial suffered its first loss in the regular-season finale.

The Irish are led by 6-3 senior center Jennifer Callier, who has signed a basketball letter of intent with Michigan State. Callier leads four double-figure Cathedral scorers with a 16.9 average and also grabs a team-high nine rebounds a game. The high-scoring Irish have scored 80 points or more six times, topped by 119 points against Indianapolis Manual. Beth Roederer joins Callier as the only senior in the starting lineup that also includes two sophomores and a freshman.

CLASS 4A

New Albany started the season ranked No. 2 to Ben Davis, but has occupied the top spot in the coaches poll since the second week of the season. Its 20-0 regular season finish was the school's first unbeaten girls basketball campaign. Now the Bulldogs are one victory away from joining Bedford North Lawrence, East Chicago Roosevelt, Fort Wayne Northrop, Kokomo, Martinsville and Warsaw as schools who have won state titles in boys basketball and girls basketball.

New Albany senior guard Kennitra Johnson scored a career-high 47 points to lead the Bulldogs past Connersville 66-61 in double overtime at the Southport Semi-State championship. It also was the highest scoring output in the 1999 state tournament. Johnson, a University of Connecticut recruit, hit five three-pointers and scored 13 points in the overtimes. Johnson's total was the most in an IHSAA tournament game since Feb. 1, 1995 when Haley Harris of Oakland City Wood Memorial scored 46 against North Posey in the opening round of the Gibson Southern Sectional. For the season, Johnson is averaging 21.0 points a game along with 5.8 assists and 5.6 steals.

Coach Angie Hinton, in her ninth season with the Bulldogs, is the wife of former Floyd Central boys basketball coach Joe Hinton. He directed the Highlanders to the boys basketball state finals in 1971 and 1989, falling in the semifinals both years.

Besides Connersville, only three opponents -- Bedford North Lawrence, Logansport and Rushville -- have stayed within single digits of New Albany this season.

Fort Wayne Snider brings a veteran team and a veteran coach to the finals. Coach Lamar Kilmer is in his 19th season with the Panthers and sports a record of 305-99. Senior forward Brooke Minniear is the only double-figure scorer at 13.1, but five other Panthers average between six and eight points a game.

Depth and experience have been keys for the Panthers. Eight different players have led Snider in scoring at least one time this season. The Panthers have three senior who have signed Division I athletic letters of intent -- Lakia Jones with St. Louis in basketball, Antoinette Gregory with Wisconsin-Green Bay in basketball, and Minniear with St. Louis in volleyball.
