SECTIONAL GROUPS FOR 2001-2002, 2002-2003

Sectional group assignments in the four-class tournaments for baseball, boys basketball, girls basketball and volleyball for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 school years, as proposed by the 2001 Realignment Committee, were approved March 23, 2001 by the IHSAA Executive Committee.

The sectional hosts for each sport will be determined by the schools within that sectional and announced at a later date.

The 2001 Realignment Committee for the sports of baseball, basketball and volleyball submitted its proposal to the IHSAA Executive Committee. The committee was comprised of 10 high school administrators from across the state. There was equal representation from the five IHSAA legislative districts, and all enrollment classes also were represented. Also serving on the committee were Ray Craft, Sandy Searcy and Theresia Wynns of the IHSAA Executive Staff.

Sectional assignments will be in affect for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 school years. If a school does not enter a tournament series in a particular sport, its sectional group will compete with the remaining schools.

Enrollment figures for use in the 2001-2002/2002-2003 cycle were announced in the IHSAA Media Release of Dec. 14, 2000. That information can be found on the IHSAA website under Media Releases/2000-01/Media Release of Dec. 14, 2000.

Of the 64 sectional groups, six remain unchanged from the two-year cycle that ends this spring. A total of 38 schools changed in classification from the classes used in the 1999-00/2000-01 cycle. The biggest changes occurred in classes 2A and 3A, with eight schools moving up and eight schools moving down. By contrast, 34 schools changed classification in the last cycle.

Please note the sectional assignments for the 2001-2002/2002-2003 cycle are based on the assumption of the IHSAA tournaments in baseball, basketball and volleyball being conducted in four classes. While there has been speculation of the IHSAA Board of Directors considering proposals that would include a move to a two-class basketball tournament structure at its annual meeting on April 30, there currently is no proposal on the agenda that would alter the by-law governing the number of classes. Any principal of a member school can submit a proposal to amend or add a by-law at each annual meeting of the IHSAA Board of Directors. To appear on the April 30 agenda, proposals must be received at the IHSAA office by April 9.

Also on April 30, the IHSAA Executive Committee will conduct its monthly meeting after the Board of Directors meeting. The 12-person Executive Committee is comprised of members from the Board of Directors serving their second and third years of a three-year term. The April 30 agenda for the Executive Committee will include an action item that would eliminate mid-week regional competition in basketball. Alternative options would include:

  1. A four-week, four-level tournament structure that has a sectional week ending on a Saturday, followed by a Saturday regional, a Saturday semi-state and a Saturday state finals involving two teams from each of the four classes.
  2. A three-week, three-level tournament structure that has a sectional week ending on a Saturday, followed by a four-team regional on a Saturday, followed by a state finals weekend that has four teams in each of the four classes.
