MARTINSVILLE TAKES HOME RECORD 10TH TEAM TITLE, BREBEUF JESUIT’S HAYASHI CLAIMS INDIVIDUAL TITLE ON SECOND PLAYOFF HOLE

Martinsville won a record setting 10th Girl’s Golf State Championship and Brebeuf Jesuit sophomore, Sophie Hayashi, claimed medalist honors on Saturday afternoon at the 35th Annual Girl’s Golf State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

Martinsville began second round play in third place, only five shots behind day one leader Columbus North.  Martinsville head coach Sharon Most’s Artesians set the mark for the second-best team score in state finals history with a 305 to run away with the victory.  Martinville’s 36-hole total of 623 ranks tied for second on the all-time list.  The Artesians overwhelmed Hamilton Southeastern (642), Columbus North (644), and Noblesville (645) for the team title, while Hayashi earned medalist honors (146) in a playoff over senior Milena Savich of Carmel (146). Senior Michele Nash of Cathedral (149), senior Kelly Short of Yorktown (149), and sophomore Brianna Scheidler of Greensburg (149) all finished tied for third.

The win for Martinsville was a record-setting 10th girls golf state title for the school, all of which have come under head coach Sharon Most.  The runner-up Hamilton Southeastern Royals’ score of 642 was good for eighth on the all-time list for low-36-hole team score, likewise Columbus North’s (644) and Noblesville’s (645) scores were good for ninth and tied for 10th on the list.

Martinsville was paced by the Silver sisters, as senior Chelsea shot 80-72-152 and junior Carleigh fired a 77-75-152.  The sisters’ scores were good enough to earn them a tie for 12th on the leader board.  Also contributing in the victory were sophomore Kelsey Benson, whose 80-78-158 put her in a tie for 22nd.  Rounding out the scoring for the Artesians were seniors Molly Burpo and Emily Habbel, as they shot 81-82-163 and 86-80-166, respectively.

In the sixth sudden death playoff in the 35 years of the state finals, Hayashi topped Savich on the second hole. On the par four, 11th hole, Savich chose to take an unplayable lie as her tee shot sailed into a tree.  Hayashi capitalized and sealed the victory as she sank her putt for par besting Savich’s bogey.

Hayashi became the fourth sophomore in girl’s golf state history to win an individual state title.  The 2007 champion joined an elite club that includes Martha Foyer of Carmel (1979), Castle’s Suzanne Noblett (1982), and Leigh Anne Hardin of Martinsville.  The three previous champions all earned at least a second championship in their prep careers.

Hayashi began the day tied for sixth place recording a one-over par 73 and matched that with another 73 on Saturday.  Both Hayashi and Savich’s 36-hole total of 146 is tied for fourteenth all-time. Hayashi finished tied for 12th as a freshman in 2006 helping Brebeuf Jesuit capture the state championship. The Braves finished tied for fifth this year.

BREBEUF JESUIT’S MEGAN TUOHY NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER

Brebeuf Jesuit’s Megan Tuohy was named winner of the 2007 Mental Attitude Award for Girls Golf after guiding her team to a sixth place finish.  Tuohy’s 85-81-166 helped her team to its second straight top ten finish, after being a part of Brebeuf Jesuit’s first state title in 2006.  The All-Marion County golfer has steered her team to the Marion County Championship in all four of her years at Brebeuf Jesuit.

During the course of this season, Tuohy has excelled on the golf course, bringing an 18-hole scoring average of 77.3 to the State Championship.  Her season was highlighted when she carded an unheard of 31 on a nine-hole match.

Tuohy is involved in many aspects of her school, as she is Senior Class President at Brebeuf Jesuit, and founded the Catholic Student Union at the school.  She has now become the second straight golfer from Brebeuf Jesuit to receive the Mental Attitude award, following in the footsteps of Aimee Neff.  Tuohy has also been a part of the Brebeuf Jesuit’s Varsity/Junior Varsity girl’s tennis team.

“To say Megan is intellectually competent would be a gross understatement,” said school principal LaTonya Turner.  She went on to say, “Those who know Megan would tell you that she’s a loving and compassionate individual.”

Academically, Tuohy excels, as she holds a 4.12 cumulative GPA, earning high honor roll recognition every semester. She has narrowed her college choices to three schools, Dartmouth, Brown, and Indiana, where she plans to study pre-med.

Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee present the award to the outstanding senior participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in girls golf.

Tuohy volunteers at St. Vincent’s Children’s Hospital, where she reads stories and plays games with the children.  She also has been a camp counselor at Gnaw Bone for two years, as well as being a member of the school’s Conservation Club and being involved with Model United Nations.

Tuohy is the daughter of Marita and Brian Tuohy.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 Brebeuf Jesuit High School in the name of Megan Tuohy.  Since 1989, more than $551,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
