MARTINSVILLE TAKES HOME RECORD 10TH TEAM TITLE, BREBEUF
JESUIT’S HAYASHI CLAIMS INDIVIDUAL
Martinsville won a record
setting 10th Girl’s Golf State Championship and Brebeuf
Jesuit sophomore, Sophie Hayashi, claimed medalist honors on
Saturday afternoon at the 35th Annual Girl’s Golf State Finals at
The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
Martinsville began second round
play in third place, only five shots behind day one leader Columbus North.
The win for Martinsville was
a record-setting 10th girls golf state title for the
school, all of which have come under head coach Sharon Most. The runner-up Hamilton Southeastern Royals’
score of 642 was good for eighth on the all-time list for low-36-hole team
score, likewise Columbus North’s (644) and Noblesville’s (645) scores were good
for ninth and tied for 10th on the list.
In the sixth sudden death playoff
in the 35 years of the state finals, Hayashi topped Savich
on the second hole. On the par four, 11th hole, Savich
chose to take an unplayable lie as her tee shot sailed into a tree. Hayashi capitalized and sealed the victory as
she sank her putt for par besting Savich’s bogey.
Hayashi became the fourth
sophomore in girl’s golf state history to win an individual state title. The 2007 champion joined an elite club that
includes Martha Foyer of
Hayashi began the day tied
for sixth place recording a one-over par 73 and matched
that with another 73 on Saturday. Both
Hayashi and Savich’s 36-hole total
of 146 is tied for fourteenth all-time. Hayashi finished tied for 12th
as a freshman in 2006 helping Brebeuf Jesuit capture
the state championship. The Braves finished tied for fifth this year.

BREBEUF JESUIT’S MEGAN TUOHY NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER
Brebeuf
Jesuit’s Megan Tuohy was named winner of the 2007 Mental
Attitude Award for Girls Golf after guiding her team to a sixth place
finish. Tuohy’s
85-81-166 helped her team to its second straight top ten finish, after being a
part of Brebeuf Jesuit’s first state title in
2006. The
During the
course of this season, Tuohy has excelled on the golf
course, bringing an 18-hole scoring average of 77.3 to the State
Championship. Her season was highlighted
when she carded an unheard of 31 on a nine-hole match.
Tuohy is
involved in many aspects of her school, as she is Senior Class President at Brebeuf Jesuit, and founded the Catholic Student Union at
the school. She has now become the second
straight golfer from Brebeuf Jesuit to receive the
Mental Attitude award, following in the footsteps of Aimee Neff. Tuohy has also been
a part of the Brebeuf Jesuit’s Varsity/Junior Varsity
girl’s tennis team.
“To say Megan is
intellectually competent would be a gross understatement,” said school
principal LaTonya Turner. She went on to say, “Those who know Megan
would tell you that she’s a loving and compassionate individual.”
Academically, Tuohy excels, as she holds a 4.12 cumulative GPA, earning high
honor roll recognition every semester. She has narrowed her college choices to
three schools,
Members of the
IHSAA Executive Committee present the award to the outstanding senior participant
during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, who was
nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude,
scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in girls golf.
