BISHOP DWENGER WINS THIRD TITLE IN FOUR YEARS; JACOB TAKES ALL-AROUND

Behind Jeanna Van Hoey’s championship in the uneven bars, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won its second straight state championship and third in four years at the state gymnastics meet at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.

The Saints edged Center Grove by .2 (113.300-113.100), tied for the third closest margin of victory in state finals history. Bishop Dwenger totaled 113.300 and Center Grove 113.100 to become the first two teams to ever top 113 points in this meet. It was the fourth title overall for Bishop Dwenger to go along with its 1995 crown. All of the Dwenger champs have been coached by Rose Nix. Center Grove was looking for its first state championship.

Van Hoey, just a sophomore, captured her second straight state title in the bars competition with a 9.775. She also finished third in the balance beam at 9.45. Other Saints participants with top five performances included Rebecca Trahin (9.8) and Juanita Nix (9.8), who finished three-four, respectively, in the vault. Those two also finished ninth and 10th in the all-around.

After finishing third a year ago, Lawrence Central’s Ashley Jacob won the all-around competition at 38.800. Jacob won the floor exercise at 9.8 and was second in the vault (9.825), bars (9.7) and beam (9.475) as well. Van Hoey was the defending all-around champion but did not compete in two of the four events.

Center Grove freshman Katelyn Fernandes won the vault with a 9.9 score and Fort Wayne Snider senior Jeanna Glick won the balance beam with a 9.6.

JEANNA GLICK OF FORT WAYNE SNIDER WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD

Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee selected Jeanna Glick of Fort Wayne Snider High School as this year’s winner of the Mildred M. Ball Mental Attitude Award.

Glick, who was nominated by her principal and coach, was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability among all seniors during the meet.

Academically, she ranks 15th in her senior class of 449 students with a 4.1 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Stay in Bounds mentoring program. She plans to attend Indiana University and major in biology.

Athletically, Glick was a state qualifier each of her four years as a member of the Snider gymnastics team. She captured the sectional championship in the balance beam two weeks ago, won the event at regionals as a junior and also won the floor exercise at sectionals as a sophomore. In addition to gymnastics, she also competed in volleyball and girls swimming and diving during her Panther career.

The mental attitude award is named in honor of the former IHSAA assistant commissioner who served the Association from 1977 to 1997. During her career, Ball administered the state gymnastics tournament among other sports and also oversaw the licensing and training of all contest officials in the state of Indiana.

Glick is the daughter of Lennie and Laurie Glick of Fort Wayne.

Following the meet, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of all IHSAA tournament events, presented a check for $1,000 in the name of Glick to Snider High School. She becomes the first Snider gymnast to win the mental attitude award.
