FW DWENGER CAPTURES SECOND CONSECUTIVE IHSAA SOCCER TITLE

Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won its second consecutive girls soccer state championship, defeating North Central (Indpls.) 2-1 Saturday evening at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. 

 

The Saints (23-0-2) were on the scoreboard first at the 1:45 mark of the first half thanks to a one-on-one goal from freshman forward Jordan Pawlik, her 15th of the season.  Sophomore defender Gina Killion was credited with the assist thanks to a long lead pass. 

 

The Panthers (20-3-2) tied the match at the 44:05 mark of the second half.  Junior forward Jessica Brooks scored her 26th goal of the season on a header from inside the six yard box.  Senior forward Morgan Redman was credited with the assist on a long diagonal cross to Brooks. 

 

Dwenger took the lead on a goal from senior midfielder Lauren Ottenweller at the 55:03 mark in the second half.  Sophomore forward Lisa Underwood was credited with the assist.  The Saints would hold onto the lead for the rest of the match. 

 

Dwenger posted an 11-7 advantage in shots for the match.  The Saints senior keeper Erin Jacobson had four saves in the match. 

 

Coach Jason Wisniewski’s Saints advanced to the final match with a 3-0 shutout of Portage (17-3-1) in Saturday’s semifinal match.    Coach Jimmy Carson’s Panthers advanced to the final match with a 4-1 victory over Evansville Memorial (15-6-2) in the semifinal round.

 

North Central’s Morgan Redman received the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award following Saturday’s finale.    

 

MORGAN REDMAN NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER

Morgan Redman of North Central (Indpls.) High School was named winner of the 2006 Mental Attitude Award for Girls Soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

 

Redman is a member of the French Honor Society and copy editor of the school newspaper.  She is also a member of the Panther’s track and field team and volunteers her time with the Dynamites at the First Baptist Soccer Clinic. 

 

Redman ranks 27th in her class and carries a 4.72 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.  She is an AP Scholar and has been commended as a National Merit Student.  Redman plans to attend Stanford or Dartmouth University.

 

Redman is the daughter of Mary and Rick Redman of Indianapolis.

 

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to North Central (Indpls.) High School in the name of Morgan Redman.  Since 1989, more than $551,000 in college scholarships have been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
