Indianapolis Cathedral won its
first IHSAA Girls Soccer State Championship, defeating Penn 4-2 Saturday
evening at Kuntz Stadium in
The Fighting Irish (16-0-2)
were on the scoreboard first in the 13th minute thanks to a put back
goal from senior midfielder Alex Hall, her 1st of the season. Sophomore defender Anna Ventimiglia
was credited with the assist after an effective setup pass.
The Fighting Irish extended
their lead to 2-0 after junior Anna Parsons notched her first goal of the
season in the 26th minute.
The goal was setup by Jennifer Collins 3rd assist of the
season.
Cathedral added a third first
half goal in the 37th minute on Natalie Warner’s 2nd goal
of the season. The goal came on a corner
kick from Jennifer Collins, giving sophomore her 2nd assist of the game,
4th of the season, and The Fighting Irish a 3-0 halftime lead.
Cathedral quickly lengthened
its lead to 4-0 in the second half as sophomore Mariah Whitaker scored her 14th
goal of the year in the 42nd minute of the match.
Penn cut the lead in half with
goals in the 57th and 60th minutes by freshman Allison Scholtes and junior Sarah Blaase. The goals were assisted by senior Ashley Sill
and junior Paige Stroinski.
Cathedral posted an 17-8 advantage in shots for the match. The Fighting Irish’s junior keeper Erica Maginn had 4 saves in the match.
Coach Marc Behringer’s
Fighting Irish advanced to the final match with a 1-0 shutout of Center Grove
(20-4) in Saturday’s semifinal match.
Coach Mike Luber’s Kingsmen
advanced to the final match with a 1-0 victory over Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (18-3-2) in the semifinal round.

Zupancic received the IHSAA Mental Attitude
Award following Saturday’s finale.
Katie Zupancic of
Zupancic has been a class officer all four years,
including serving as Class President her sophomore and junior years. She is also a two year letter winner of the
Fighting Irish’s track and field team and volunteers her time with the numerous
charitable organizations.
Zupancic ranks 10th in her class and carries a 4.45 cumulative grade point average on a
4.0 scale. She is a Four-Year
Presidential Scholar and has Spanish I and II awards, as well Theology 10
award. Zupancic
plans to attend
Katie is the
daughter of Carrie and Thomas Zupancic of
Indiana Farm
Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner,
presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to
