Evansville Memorial 2, Carmel 0.

South Bend St. Joseph's 3, Fort Wayne Northrop 0.

 

 Evansville Memorial avenged a 2-0 season defeat and shocked defending state champion Carmel 2-0 this afternoon to set up the 1998 IHSAA Girls Soccer state championship match against South Bend St. Joseph's tonight (8 p.m.) at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis. South Bend St. Joseph's defeated Fort Wayne Northrop 3-0.

 

Ranked sixth in the final coaches association poll of the season, Evansville Memorial (16-3-1) led 1-0 at halftime on Katie Keown's goal at 37:00. The Tigers took control when Emily Markwell added another goal at 14:45 of the second half.

 

Overall, Carmel had eight shots on goal to five for Evansville Memorial. Carmel (21-1-1) played without senior midfielder Kara Bryan, it leading scorer this season with 20 goals. Bright was injured in last week's semi-state.

 

Carmel won the IHSAA state title in 1994, 1995 and 1997. Evansville Memorial defeated Carmel to win the 1996 state title. Tonight's championship also is a rematch as Evansville Memorial defeated South Bend St. Joseph's 1-0 earlier in the season.

 

A four-time state finalist, South Bend St. Joseph's (17-4-1) received goals from Jennifer Roche at 12:46 of the first half, Laura Podell at 29:41 of the first half and Lauren Danielson 35:15 of the second half to hand Fort Wayne Northrop its first loss of the season. The Indians outshot Fort Wayne Northrop (18-1-2) seven to three.
