CLINTON PRAIRIE’S BIG THIRD INNING EARNS CROWN

Clinton Prairie used two big plays to score four runs as the Gophers captured the IHSAA Class A softball championship with a 6-1 victory over North Daviess on Saturday at the Ben Davis Softball Complex in Indianapolis.

It was the second softball state championship for Clinton Prairie to go along with its 2002 title. Both Gophers teams were coached by 13th year leader Randy Cooper.

Clinton Prairie broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when, with one out and bases loaded, Kathy Seager doubled to right field clearing the bases for Clinton Prairie’s first three runs. Seager took third on the throw to home plate. The next batter, Stacey Jarrett, then sacrificed scoring Seager from third when the fielder’s throw to home plate went wide.

North Daviess got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Kynsley Byrer doubled to left field scoring Joncellia Shafer from second base. Shafer had singled to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

The Gophers added two more runs in the top of the sixth. After three straight singles to load the bases, Alex Castle hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Megan Best. An out later, Ivy Wright scored on a Seager bunt.

Seager finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI.

After starting the season 1-3, the Gophers reeled off 28 consecutive victories to finish the year 29-3 and advanced to the final game after a 7-1 victory over first time participant Lanesville in Friday’s semifinals.

North Daviess defeated Pioneer, 4-2, on Friday night to earn a spot in a championship game for the first time in school history in any team sport. The Cougars were coached by Jodi Berry.
