EASTERN WINS SECOND CROWN IN THREE YEARS

Eastern of Greentown put up all of its runs in the first three innings and made it stand up in a 4-2 victory over Frankton in the Class 2A championship game on Saturday at the Ben Davis Softball Complex in Indianapolis.

The Comets matched Frankton by scoring a run in each of the first two innings and then plated two more in the third to capture the school’s second softball state championship in three seasons. Eastern also won the 2003 Class A title in the three class system.

In Frankton’s opening at-bat, Chelsea Smith doubled to centerfield for a promising start. Kayla Powell then tripled to the right-center wall scoring Smith to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

Eastern answered in the bottom half when Breanna Howell doubled to left center with one out. Molly Haines pinch-ran for Howell and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice before Cassie Harvey tripled down the left field line to score Haines.

Both teams put up runs in the second inning to remain tied 2-2 before Eastern’s third inning proved decisive.

Cayleigh Harvey led off with a double to left and scored on the next at-bat as Cassie Harvey singled up the middle. She moved over to third base on the throw to home plate. After a ground out, Tracie Lamb then singled down the right field line to score Cassie, who finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Smith, Powell and Cassie Harvey each tied the 2A championship record for most hits with three each.

Howell went the distance on the mound for the Comets striking out eight batters and finishing 22-3 for the season.

Eastern (31-3) had collected a 2-0 victory over Providence in Friday’s semifinals to qualify for the championship round. The Comets coach was Jerry Haines who also guided the 2003 team to the crown.

Frankton, which finished 24-6, eliminated Bremen with an 8-2 victory in the other semifinal game Friday night. The Eagles were coached by Jeremy Parker.
