EASTERN WINS
SECOND CROWN IN THREE YEARS
Eastern of
Greentown put up all of its runs in the first three innings and made it stand
up in a 4-2 victory over Frankton in the Class 2A championship game on Saturday
at the Ben Davis Softball Complex in
The Comets
matched Frankton by scoring a run in each of the first two innings and then plated
two more in the third to capture the school’s second softball state
championship in three seasons. Eastern also won the 2003 Class A title in the
three class system.
In Frankton’s
opening at-bat, Chelsea Smith doubled to centerfield for a promising start.
Kayla Powell then tripled to the right-center wall scoring Smith to give the
Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
Eastern
answered in the bottom half when Breanna Howell
doubled to left center with one out. Molly Haines pinch-ran for Howell and advanced
to third on a fielder’s choice before Cassie Harvey tripled down the left field
line to score Haines.
Both teams put
up runs in the second inning to remain tied 2-2 before Eastern’s
third inning proved decisive.
Cayleigh
Harvey led off with a double to left and scored on the next at-bat as Cassie
Harvey singled up the middle. She moved over to third base on the throw to home
plate. After a ground out, Tracie Lamb then singled down the right field line to
score Cassie, who finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Smith, Powell
and Cassie Harvey each tied the 2A championship record for most hits with three
each.
Howell went
the distance on the mound for the Comets striking out eight batters and finishing
22-3 for the season.
Eastern (31-3)
had collected a 2-0 victory over
Frankton,
which finished 24-6, eliminated
Eastern’s Breanna Howell Named Winner of
Mental Attitude Award
Breanna
Howell of
Howell was
the starting pitcher for the Eastern softball team this season and was a member
of the 2003 team that captured the Class A
championship. She also was a four-year participant in basketball for Eastern.
Among her
accomplishments are graduating Summa Cum Laude with an Academic Honors Diploma
and ranking fifth in her class of 125. Howell also was named to the
