Martinsville Wins First IHSAA Softball Championship

Junior catcher Jessica Breeden ripped a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in senior second baseman Allison Lewis with the winning run to give Martinsville its first state softball championship.  Martinsville earned the 4A crown with a 3-2 triumph over McCutcheon at Ben Davis High School on Saturday night.

Lewis started the two-out rally in the ninth inning with a double to right center, setting up Breeden’s heroics.  Martinsville (28-1-1) got a strong performance on the mound from sophomore Abby Calloway.  Calloway improved to 9-1 on the season by allowing one earned run and five hits in nine innings.  Calloway helped her own cause with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third to give her team a 2-0 lead.

McCutcheon (23-10) rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.  The Mavericks, who were making their first-ever trip to the IHSAA state finals, got two singles to start the rally.  Following a sacrifice bunt, Eliza Scanlon drove in the first run with an RBI groundout.  Freshman pinch-runner Maggie Tull then scored the tying run for coach Jim Bates’ Mavs with two outs on a passed ball

Martinsville, under coach Ken Rhoden, was making its second consecutive appearance in the IHSAA state finals.

McCutcheon’s Heather Han Named Winner of Mental Attitude Award

Senior catcher Heather Han of McCutcheon is the Class 4A recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.  Han received the honor following Saturday evening’s state championship game at Ben Davis High School.  The IHSAA Executive Council presents the award to a student-athlete who excels in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in softball.

Han helped the 23-10 Mavericks to their first-ever berth in the state finals, leading the team in hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples, and homers.  She is a three-sport star who earned 10 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, and softball.  The 2004-05 Hoosier Crossroads Conference Sportsmanship Award winner is a 2005 Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) All-State second-team selection and North all-star in softball, an all-conference and all-area pick in volleyball, and she was the team captain in basketball this season.

Han graduated with an Honors Diploma and a 3.81 cumulative grade point average.  She earned the Academic Excellence Award this year and was a volunteer coach in softball and basketball for elementary-age kids.

“Heather is a model student athlete,” said McCutcheon principal John Beeker.  “She played key roles in volleyball (hitter), basketball (point guard), and volleyball (hitter) in her senior year.  The most impressive part was her ability to lead with class and hard work.”

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented McCutcheon with a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Heather Han.

Heather will be attending Eastern Michigan University on an academic/athletic scholarship.
