LADY KINGS ARE
The third trip
to the finals was a charm for the Lady Kings of Lewis Cass as they defeated Frankton,
3-0, to capture this year’s IHSAA Class 2A state championship.
After two
lengthy rain delays that marred the game, Cass scored what would be the winning
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs. Brittany LoCoco lined a single over a leaping Frankton shortstop scoring
Ashley Snider and Danya Long to break open a
scoreless tie. Frankton then misplayed a fly ball to leftfield by Haley Tolle that scored LoCoco.
Junior Ollmay Wilson (22-2) struck out eight batters and helped
Cass win their final 23 games of the year to finish 28-2. They were coached by
Brent Blinn.
Frankton,
coached by Jeremy Parker, finished the season 27-3 and as the runner-up for the
second straight year. Senior pitcher Kayla Powell recorded five strikeouts for
the Eagles. Junior Samantha Hymes had both hits for
Frankton.
It was only
the second state championship in any sport for Cass, which also took the 2003 2A
championship in boys basketball.
The first
rain delay began in the bottom of the second inning and lasted three hours and
five minutes; the second one which interrupted the sixth inning went for 35
minutes.
