MARTINSVILLE WINS BACK-TO-BACK STATE TITLES

Martinsville defeated Chesterton, 1-0, in the 4A championship game to become the first team to ever win back-to-back state titles in the 22-year history of the state tournament.

The lone run of the night was scored in the third inning when sophomore Alaina Zloty drew a walk and later scored on a double to left-center field by senior Jessica Breeden.

Martinsville senior Lynn Zloty struck out 10 and allowed only two hits on the night ending Chesterton’s 30-game win streak. The Martinsville defense allowed only two runs in seven tournament games. Coached by seventh-year leader Ken Rhoden, they finished 26-5 in their third straight appearance in the state finals.

Chesterton finished the year at 30-2 under 23rd year coach LouAnn Hopson. The Trojans were making their first appearance in the state finals. Junior Dawn McClellan struck out eight Martinsville batters and suffered her first loss of the season (21-1).

Katie Stahura of Chesterton named Mental Attitude Award winner

Katie Stahura of Chesterton High School was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A softball.

Stahura finished her high school career as salutatorian of her class and has earned an academic scholarship to Marquette University where she’ll study Biomedical Studies.

She has been involved in numerous school organizations and activities including the National Honor Society, Student Government, a Peer Tutor, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions).

Athletically, she won three letters in softball and was named All-Conference the last two years. She served as team captain this season.

She is the daughter of John and Kim Stahura of Valparaiso.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Chesterton High School in the name of Stahura.
