at
In the top
of the 9th inning Alexis Davis of Lutheran hit a ground ball past pitcher
Audra Sanders into centerfield scoring Amanda Korb
from second base. Korb reached with a single and was
then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt.
Lutheran
coached by third-year skipper Don Pietz finishes the
season with a 25-6 record. This is Lutheran’s second IHSAA softball state
title. They won the class A title in 2004.
First-year
head coach Gordon Wood led the Tecumseh Braves to the state title game for the
first time since 2003 when they finished as runner-up. The Braves finish the 2007
season with 28-4 record.
Lutheran’s
ace pitcher Morgan Lewis pitched a nine inning three hit shutout. Tecumseh
pitcher Audra Sanders had a fantastic 22-4 season, that included a no-hitter in
Friday night’s semi-final game against South Central, but had no offensive
support in the title game. Ultimately, the Tecumseh bats were shut down by the
effort of Lutheran’s Lewis.
In the top
of the 7th inning Tecumseh right fielder Ali Nord
threw out Colleen Pendergast of Lutheran at first base after Pendergast hit a
hard ground ball through the right side. Nord picked
up the ball cleanly and fired in time to get Pendergast.
Tecumseh
third baseman Katy Kruse tied a class A record with
one stolen base.
The future
looks good for Lutheran. Lewis, the Saints pitcher is only a freshman, and
Lutheran will lose only two seniors to graduation.
