CASS RALLIES LATE FOR CLASS 2A STATE TITLE

Leandra Baber and Emily Watkins each delivered an RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning Monday as Cass rallied for a 2-1 victory over Bremen in the Class 2A state championship game at North Central.

Trailing 1-0, Baber's single to left drove home Taylor DeHaven to tie the score after the game had been delayed by rain for 46 minutes in the first inning.

Sarah Robertson subbed for Baber on the bases and, after the Kings loaded the bases on an infield hit and a walk, Watkins hit one between the pitcher and third to bring in the go-ahead run helping Cass (21-11) to its second 2A title in three years.

Cass pitcher Amie Sites had to get out of a seventh inning jam, however, as Bremen’s Rachel Jensen and Courtney Bahr opened with singles for Bremen (23-9). Sites was able to snuff out the rally as the Lions hit into two fielder's-choice groundouts and another groundout to end the game.

Jenny Frain drove home Jenni Andrews in the third for Bremen’s only run.

In semifinal action, Bremen scored two runs in the seventh rallying for a 2-1 victory over South Spencer in a game that had been suspended Friday. Cass followed by defeating Southwestern (Hanover), 2-0, in the following game that was delayed nearly three hours in the top of the fifth.

Cass was coached by first year leader Scott Rouch, while Bremen was directed by 18th year coach Chris English. South Spencer finished 20-11, and Southwestern closed 18-7.

JENNI ANDREWS NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER

Jenni Andews of Bremen High School was selected as the winner of the Mental Attitude Award following the championship game.

At the conclusion of each championship game, the IHSAA Executive Committee presents an award for mental attitude to an outstanding senior participant in each classification of the state tournament. The recipient of the award, nominated by her principal and coach, was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in softball.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Bremen High School in the name of Andrews.
