PARK TUDOR GIRLS TIE STATE
RECORD WITH FOURTH STRAIGHT TENNIS TITLE
The 34th
state championship contest was a rematch of the previous two seasons as well as
one from earlier this month. And each time, the outcome was the same as No. 1 Park
Tudor defeated No. 2 Munster, 4-1, for the girls state
tennis crown at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
It was the
record-tying fourth straight title for the Panthers (20-0) equaling the
standard set by Evansville Memorial which won championships from 1993 to 1996.
It was the sixth state title overall for Park Tudor and coach Dave Heffern who have never lost a state finals match (12-0) since their
initial appearance in 1998.
Park Tudor
took victories at every position except No. 1 singles where Munster junior Mary
Hill remained undefeated for the year thus far (25-0) and her career (77-0) following
a 6-1, 6-4 win over Park Tudor’s Lindsay Thygesen. Hill will compete in
next weekend’s state finals tournament for singles players.
Caroline
Emhardt (18-2) won twice for Park Tudor at her No. 2 singles position including
handing Munster’s Christina Lee (24-1) her first loss of the year, 6-2, 6-2. Both Panthers doubles teams also swept their matches.
Elizabeth Emhardt and Heather Rogers beat Vanessa Sepiol and Samantha Tantillo
of Munster, 6-4, 6-0 in the championship round, and Julie Elbin and Sarah
MacPhail (16-2) beat Munster’s Rachael Heiniger and Kamryn Klawitter, 6-2,
6-1.
Maggie
MacPhail won the other singles match for Park Tudor with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)
victory over previously undefeated Kristina Kovacich (12-1) at the No. 3 spot.
MacPhail finished the year 21-2.
For Munster
(20-2) and coach Bob Modesto, both defeats this year came
to Park Tudor including a 3-2 home loss on May 1. It was Munster’s (20-2)
fifth trip to the state championship match overall and third straight.
Park Tudor
defeated No. 3 Jasper, 4-1, in the morning semifinal round to advance to the
final, while Munster took a 3-2 decision from No. 5 Zionsville. In the
consolation match, Zionsville defeated Jasper, 3-2.
