MUNSTER, BREBEUF JESUIT
PLAYERS CROWNED STATE CHAMPS
Munster’s
Mary Hill and Brebeuf Jesuit’s Annabeth Barnard and Gabrielle Rubenstein
captured their respective tournament championships during the IHSAA Individual
State Finals for girls tennis at North Central High School on Saturday.
Hill (28-0)
capped her prep career with her first singles title defeating defending
champion Caroline Hedrick of Columbus North, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Hill became the
state’s winningest singles player during last weekend’s team finals
and added two more victories on Saturday to move her career record to 104-1.
Her lone high school defeat came at the hands of Hedrick (27-1) during last
year’s state semifinals. Hill also became the first Munster player to win
the singles tournament.
It was just
the second prep defeat for the Columbus North junior who was making her third
consecutive appearance in the state championship match. Hedrick finished as the
runner-up as a frosh in 2007 and completed an undefeated season in 2008 by
winning it all.
In doubles,
Barnard, a senior, and Rubenstein, a junior, won once on Friday and twice on
Saturday beating senior Megan Renninger and sophomore Olivia Trancik of Carmel
in the championship match, 6-4, 6-1.
Barnard and
Rubenstein (24-1) won eight straight post-season matches and became the second
doubles team from Brebeuf Jesuit to take home the doubles crown. Melissa Beeman
and Kate Brune team to win the 1991 title.
Renninger
and Trancik (25-2) were a week removed from helping Carmel to the team state
championship.
