TWO RECORDS SET; NORTHROP GIRLS CLAIM FIFTH STRAIGHT CROWN

Fort Wayne Northrop won three events and added to its record string of state championships with its fifth in a row at the Robert C. Haugh Track Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington.

It was the first time an IHSAA State Track & Field meet was held in Bloomington since 1908 and was part of the Association’s Centennial Celebration returning to the place where the first state championship event in any sport – boys track and field -- was held in 1904.

The Bruins, coached by Tom Knudson, totaled 90 points at the meet, just shy of their record 93 set a year ago, and outdistanced runner-up and city rival Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran with 81 points. Carmel placed third with 32, Warren Central was fourth with 30 and Lawrence Central rounded out the top five with 23.

Junior Shauntel Elcock of Northrop won two events, including her third straight in the 400 meters in 53.94. She also defended her 200 title from last year placing first in 24.76. Tamara Adams was the first of the Northrop winners on the day taking the 100 Hurdles in 14.40.

Two state meet records were set during the meet.

Chesterton defended its championship in the 3200 Relay setting a state meet record for the second consecutive year in a time of 9:09.50. Lead off leg Sarah Kehe was the only difference from last year’s team as Ali Bishel, Kelly Peller and Cassie Peller were a part of the 2003 winning team. Last year’s Trojan relay team finished in 9:11.30.

The other record was set in the Pole Vault by Katie Veith, a freshman from Homestead, who cleared 12-6, bettering last year’s winning height of 11-10.25. The Pole Vault will become a fully scored event in 2005 after not awarding points as an exhibition the last two years.

Carmel’s Grabinski Wins Mental Attitude Award

Marie Grabinski of Carmel High School was selected as the 2004 recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in Girls Track and Field by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Grabinski, in her first year as a member of the Greyhounds’ track team, placed second in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races. She was also part of Carmel’s state championship tennis squad last spring as its No. 2 singles player and will compete in tomorrow’s regional doubles tournament in Indianapolis. Last fall, she placed 18th in the state cross country meet.

Grabinski will attend Northwestern University on an athletic scholarship next fall with plans to double major in International Studies and French.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Carmel High School in the name of Grabinski.
