NORTHROP WINS SIXTH CONSECUTIVE STATE TITLE

Fort Wayne Northrop had only one individual state champion this year but the Bruins still managed to take home the state championship trophy at the 32nd Annual IHSAA Girls Track and Field State Meet at the Robert C. Haugh Track Complex in Bloomington.

Northrop, which added to its record string with its sixth state championship, accumulated 65 points and easily outdistanced runner-up Lawrence Central which ended with 37. Ben Davis finished third with 33, North Central of Indianapolis was fourth with 24 and Chesterton with 20 rounded out the top five. Tom Knudson has been the coach for each of Northrop’s titles.

The pole vault was added as a scored event for the first time this year and Northrop certainly capitalized on it. Senior Brianna Neumann won while the Bruins received strong support from Lakeesha Burnett who placed second in the 100 and 200 meters, Faith Sherrill, who ended up third in the shot put and Tamara Adams and Jasmine Russell, who finished four-five in the 100 hurdles. Northrop’s 400 relay team also took home second place.

Neumann won the pole vault but shared the meet record in the event with sophomore Katie Veith of Homestead, the defending champ, both of whom cleared 12-9. Neumann, however, had fewer attempts at that height and was awarded the top spot over Veith.

Two other records were set including the 3200 relay for the third year in a row. Northridge won for the first time with the team of Megan Miller, Aimee Gingerich, Lynn Pezzanite and Megan Jackson finishing in a record time of 9:08.33. The team from Chesterton, which was gunning for its third consecutive state title in the event, finished second in 9:12.76.

Muncie Central’s Vanneisha Ivy accounted for the third meet standard in the 100 Hurdles as the junior was clocked in 13.95.

Six returning state champions from a year ago were competing in the meet but only Kayla Tucker, a senior from Evansville Reitz, repeated in her event clearing 5-8 in the high jump. Emily Breslin of Indianapolis Cathedral also cleared 5-8 but took second place based on more attempts.

Senior Jeanne Roberts of Lawrence Central swept both sprint events winning the 100 in 11.84 and the 200 in 24.48.

Fort Wayne Northrop senior Shauntel Elcock’s bid to win her fourth consecutive state championship in the 400 meters fell short as she finished fifth in the event in 57.79. Lingering hamstring and tendon injuries in both legs hampered the Northrop star who has won five individual and two relay titles in her first three years, but her struggles were to the benefit of a South Bend Adams senior. Caitlin Lauer finished in 56.26 for her first state crown.

A total of 4,767 fans were in attendance for the meet which resulted in two-day total of 10,718.

Brebeuf Jesuit’s Geneva Trotter Named Winner Of Mental Attitude Award

Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee selected Geneva Trotter of Brebeuf Jesuit Prep School as this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award in Girls Track and Field.

Trotter qualified for the state meet in three different events (long jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles) and won the long jump with a leap of 18-7.25. At Brebeuf, she is a five-sport varsity athlete earning letters in soccer, cross country, basketball, track and the club sport of lacrosse. She was an Academic All-American in lacrosse and earned Academic All-State honors in basketball and track.

With an emphasis on Honors and Advanced Placement courses at her school, Trotter has earned a 3.95 GPA to date and scored a 1,450 on the SAT. She’ll take her potential to Harvard University where she’ll study medicine.

She has volunteered her time with St. Vincent DePaul, the North Willow Care Center for the mentally disabled and on a mission trip to inner-city Chicago.

The mental attitude award is presented annually to a senior, nominated by her principal and coach, who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in track and field.

She is the daughter of Lester and Linda Trotter.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s proud corporate partner for all state championship events, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Brebeuf Jesuit Prep School in the name of Geneva Trotter.
