WARREN CENTRAL WINS SECOND STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Warren Central captures its second straight state championship in the 34th Annual IHSAA State Finals at the Robert C. Haugh track in Bloomington. The competition included two weather delays that halted action for three hours and 34 minutes. Warren Central compiled 64 points, 30 more than the second place finishers Lawrence North and Valparaiso. The Warriors won both the boys and the girls state title for the second year in a row.

Warren Central junior Candyce McGrone collected three first place finishes. She won the 100 meters in 11.97, the 200 meters in 24.04 and was a member of Warren Central’s 400 relay team that won the state title with a time of 46.72. McGrone has a total of six individual and relay state titles in her high school career.

Alex Banfich of Culver Academies breezes to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter run. She won the 3200 meter run last year, and added the 1600 meter title, bringing her total to three state crowns.

In the long jump, sophomore Erynn Young of Muncie Central repeats as champion taking the title with a jump of 18-11. Homestead senior Katie Veith was attempting to set a state record in the pole vault for the fourth consecutive year, but had to settle for the state title without setting the state record. This is Katie’s third state title in the pole vault. No doubt the wet track conditions came into play on her vault of 12-6, a foot shorter than her state record from a year ago.

Defending her 800 meter crown is sophomore Hannah Farley of Park Tudor who defended her title with a time of 55:14. Senior Valerie Stone of Gary Roosevelt leaps the competition in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles with times of 14.38 and 43.68. Freshman Ellie Tidman of Batesville out jumped defending champ Emily Breslin of Indianapolis Cathedral in the high jump with a jump of 5-9.

In the final race of the night, Gary West Side took the crown in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:55.68 and in the process beat Candyce McGrone and the defending champs Warren Central. This race did not finish until 11:45 pm due to the weather delays.

Besides track, she has also lettered in cross country for the Wildcats. Scheiwe will attend Hillsdale college in Michigan in the fall to pursue a degree in psychology.
